SIPDE System

• When driving you have to perform many tasks at
  once, such as controlling the car, reading signs,
  and reacting to other drivers.
• The SIPDE system is an organized way to gather
  and process information.
• Using this system will help you make decisions
  and reduce driving risks.

What does SIPDE stand for?

• Search or scan
• Identify
• Predict
• Decide
• Execute

Search or Scan

• Search the road ahead of you
• Check your rearview and side mirrors
• Look for oncoming traffic
• Look for traffic approaching from the left, right
  or behind you

Identify

• Identify objects or conditions that could
  interfere with your path of travel such as
• -other vehicles
• -pedestrians or animals
• -stationary objects such as debris,
  potholes, guardrails, and roadways signs

Predict

• Predict what changes in conditions on or near the
  road could increase your level of risk
• Predict what could happen ahead of you to
  determine what you would do next

Decide

• Decide what actions you need take to avoid a
  hazard
• Decide how to act based on the type of hazard you
  encounter
• -Single hazard (car on the side of the road)
• -Multiple hazards (multi-car accident)
• -Stationary hazard (road construction, debris)
• -Moving hazard (slow moving vehicle, flying
  debris)

Execute

• Act out the decision you have made, based upon
  the hazard you see or predict
• Examples of changes you could make
• -Speeding up
• -Slowing down
• -Stopping your car
• -Changing lanes
• -Changing direction
