1
John 1028
Jesus said, I give them eternal life, and they
shall never perish no one can snatch them out of
my hand.
Blessed are those who mourn
2
Matthew 513 It is acknowledging our total
spiritual bankruptcy. My power shows up best in
weak people (2 Cor. 129, LB).
3
Philippians 346
If anyone ever had reason to hope that he could
save himself, it would be I. If others could be
saved by what they are, certainly I could!
4
Philippians 346
For I went through the Jewish initiation ceremony
when I was eight days old, having been born in a
pure-blooded Jewish home that was a branch of the
old original Benjamin family.
5
Philippians 346
So I was a real Jew if there ever was one!
Whats moreI was a member of the Pharisees who
demand the strictest obedience to every Jewish
law and custom.
6
Philippians 346
And sincere? Yes, so much so that I greatly
persecuted the Church and I tried to obey every
Jewish rule and regulation down to the very last
point
7
I Timothy 115
the worst of sinners
8
Acts 2216
What are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized
and wash your sins away, calling on his name.
9
Philippians 379
But whatever was to my profit I now consider
loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I
consider everything a loss compared to the
surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my
Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.
10
Philippians 379
I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ
and be found in him, not having a righteousness
of my own that comes from the law, but that which
is through faith in Christ
11
John 1028
Jesus said, I give them eternal life, and they
shall never perish no one can snatch them out of
my hand.
Matthew 54 Blessed are those who mourn, for
they will be comforted.
12
What does it mean to mourn?
  • to feel deep sorrow, to show great concern, or
    to deplore some existing wrong.
  • Blessed are those who know they are in trouble
and have enough sense to admit it (Bruner, The
    Christ Book, 152).

13
What does it mean to mourn?
  • It is confessing our unworthiness before God and
    utter dependence on him.

14
Lev. 2640-42
If they will confess their sins and the sins of
their fatherstheir treachery against me and
their hostility toward me, which made me hostile
toward them so that I sent them into the land of
their enemiesthen
15
Lev. 2640-42
I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my
covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham,
and I will remember the land
16

I confess the sins we Israelites have done
against you. My fathers family and I have
sinned against you. We have been wicked toward
you and have not obeyed the commands, rules, and
laws you gave your servant Moses (Nehemiah
16-7).
17

They stood and confessed their sins and their
ancestors sins. For a fourth of the day six
hours they stood where they were and read from
the Book of Teachings of the lord their God. For
another fourth of the day six hours they
confessed their sins and worshiped the Lord their
God (Neh. 924).
18
What does it mean to mourn?
  • Mourning is not self-condemnation
  • Some people confess a sin a thousand times. I
tell them to confess it once, then thank God a
    thousand times for forgiving them.
  • Maurice Horn

19
While Peter was still speaking a rooster crowed.
Then the Lord turned and looked straight at
Peter. (Luke 2260, 61)
20

Those who keep secrets from God keep their
distance from God. Those who are honest with God
draw near to God. Max Lucado, In the Grip of
Grace, 124.
21
Why should we mourn or confess?
  • Mourning helps us hate sin
  • The closer we come to Christ, the more sinful we
will feel. Not to see our own deformity is not
to see the beauty of Christs character. When we
are fully awake to our own sinfulness, we shall
    appreciate Christ .
  • Ellen White, Review Herald, 25 September 1900).

22

I was a sinner running after sin. But now Im a
sinner running from sin.
23
Why should we mourn or confess?
  • Mourning helps us hate sin
  • Mourning helps us draw closer to God.

24
John 1028
Jesus said, I give them eternal life, and they
shall never perish no one can snatch them out of
my hand.
Blessed are those who mourn for they will be
comforted.
