The Air Pollution Application
CrossGrid Tutorial Exercise

Martín, Ramón Doallo and F. F. Rivera University
of A Coruña University of Santiago de Compostela
2
Introduction
  • The air pollution application uses a Eulerian
model to simulate the concentration of different
pollutants in the environment of As Pontes Power
    Plant in A Coruña (Spain)
  • We explain how to run the application into the
    Crossgrid tesbed using the MD
  • We must launch the MD, click on the Start Jobs
Wizard button and select the Air Pollution
    application.
  • A graphical plugin allows the user to set the
input parameters, and see the concentrations of
    pollutants graphically

3
Input Parameters Tab
In this window several input parameters as the
simulation date, the number of hours of
simulation and the simulation model can be chosen.
4
Description Tab
In this window the user can write a brief
description of the simulation and must specify
the path for the executable
5
Resources Tab
From the Resources Tab we must specify the node
where we want execute the application, the job
type and the number of processors
6
Files Tab
In the Files tab we specify the input and output
files of our application. An output file for the
output refreshable image is needed
(mapadebits.bmp)
7
Job Monitoring Dialog
After a job submission, we must click on the Job
Monitoring Dialog in the desktop of the MD and
this window will appear. It shows the status of
the different jobs. If a job is running we can
see its output.
8
Output Plugin
  • This output plugin is shown pressing Visualize in
    the job monitoring dialog
  • The type box shows the pollutant that is being
represented while the level box presents the
    altitude of the representation.
  • It is no refreshable by the moment, only the
pollutant concentration of the last iteration is
    shown

9
Refreshable output
  • This view is shown presing details in the job
monitoring dialog and selecting the files tab
  • We select our output file and press Visualize
  • This image can be refreshed automatically setting
    a refresh period

10
Step by Step exercise (1/2)
  • Launch the Migrating Desktop (http//ras.man.pozna
    n.pl/crossgrid/)
  • Click on the Start Jobs Wizard button.
  • Select Applications -gt Air Pollution (The input
    plugin will be opened)
  • Chose the date of the simulation (YYYYMMDD
format), the start hour and the number of hours
of simulation. (Input files for the date 20030215
are provided, please select this in the
    exercise).
  • Select the Description Tab.
  • Set the Executable Path (/flatfiles/SE00/cg/wp1_4_
    4/STEMII_SE00-par-p4.exe)
  • Select the Resources Tab
  • Set the hostname (cg01.ific.uv.es2119/jobmanager-
pbs-infinite) , the jobType (MPICH) and the
    nodeNumber (2).
  • Select the Files Tab.

11
Step by Step exercise (2/2)
  • Add a new file, rename it to mapadebits.bmp, set
a local filename in the Virtual Directory with
the same name, set the type to out and the
refresh to 5 or 10 seconds
  • Press the Submit button.
  • Click on the Starts Job Monitoring Dialog button,
refresh the list of jobs and then refresh the
last job until its status turn to Running.
  • Press the Details Button and select the Files
    Tab.
  • Select mapadebits.bmp and press Visualize.
  • Set the refresh period to 5 or 10 seconds, and
    press apply.
  • The image will change along the time while the
    program is running.
  • This image represents the concentration of SO2 at
    300 m high.
  • If you press the Visualize button in the Job
Monitoring Dialog window the output plugin of the
application will be shown. The representation
scale is shown in the righ part. The represented
pollutant and the level of the representation is
also indicated. (This ouptput plugin still do not
    allow refreshable images)
