What is it?
  • Cultural movement that began in 1920s
  • Featured the element of surprise, the unexpected,
    and dream-like
  • Conceived from the idea of Freuds with dream of
    analysis and hidden unconscious
  • Often times aligned with Communism and
    Anarchismagainst a democratic government (or any
    at all)

A New Idea
  • Started as a an anti-art that deliberately defied
    reason
  • Based on positive expression
  • Reaction against the rationalization of the World
    War I
  • Surreal means a higher reality
  • Not real, but just appearance
  • Often meant to evoke a What the..? reaction

    subconscious mind
