yet another New Adventure!
2You will start your M4 electives in about 5
months.
- Today I will explain how the process works
- how to get the ball rolling

4Flexibility
- You have a lot of freedom in designing your own
4th year elective schedule - There are certain requirements you must meet, but
you tailor many of your electives to your own
interests
5PARTNERSHIP
- This process is a PARTNERSHIP between you and
me. - YOU will determine how smooth the scheduling of
electives goes . . . or not. - And I will do everything I can to make your
schedule happen.
6Electives - Graduation Requirements
- 32 weeks of M4 electives are required
- Of which 14 weeks must be intramural electives
- The remaining 18 weeks of electives, may be
extramural, intramural, or a combination of
bothNOTE Your 4 weeks of MSI or PSI is a
separate requirement and does not count as part
of the 32 weeks of electives.
7Non-Clinical Electives
- 8 weeks maximum credit for non-clinical
electives - Included might be
- HNUT 801 4-wk Online Nutrition (Nov, Dec,
Jan only) - HNUT 802 2-wk Online Nutrition (Nov, Dec,
Jan only) - MCUR 800 Online Ethics (Dec Jan only)
- MCBA 802 Dissection-Based Anatomy
- MCBA 805 Advanced Neuroanatomy
- ALL Research electives
- Any other extramural electives that are not
clinical in nature Popular to take during
interview months
8Maximum of 12 weeks allowed in a Single Specialty
- In general you may only do 12 weeks in any one
specialty, except medicine and pediatrics - In some highly competitive specialties (Derm,
Rad, Ortho, etc) you may petition Dean Lazarus
for approval to do an additional 4 wks of
research non-clinical elective work. (These 4
research weeks would count as part of your 8
weeks maximum non-clinical.)

- These will be done at sites where you will
consider applying for a residency program - Extramural electives must be structured, well
supervised and affiliated with an accredited
university who has a residency program in that
specialty field. - These may also include Research and International
electives

28Elective Requirements
- Immunizations
- Make sure you are up-to-date many require a
2-step PPD, some now require Measles titer. - Advocate sites and Stroger - If your health
forms are already on file, they will be good for
a one year period. - Certifications - Log onto D2L to self-enroll
- HIPAA
- BSISNeed either a certificate or a letter
requested from the Registrars Office proving you
are certified.
29MISSING PARTS
Caution!! Here is an area where many elective
requests get slowed down. You must submit the
additional forms at the same time you submit the
elective request form intramural or
extramural. If you do not then into the
MISSING PARTS Folder your paperwork will go . .
And you wont get out until your paperwork is
complete it will not be processed. So please
make several copies of your immunizations forms,
HIPAA, BSIS, and your medical health insurance
card and attach to the elective applications as
needed.
30How Many? When? Etc.
- You may submit TWO elective requests for the same
start dates. -
- You must submit them no less than 4-6 weeks
before the start date.

- On FEBRUARY 25You may begin submitting elective
requests for the months of June, July, August,
and September ONLY. - On MAY 1st, You may submit requests for the
months of June through December. - After that you may submit requests 6 months
before elective start date.
32Intramural Date Exceptions
- Most electives start on any MONDAY, but there are
some that have specific start dates. I will
email the dates to you as soon as I receive them.

have to wait until 6 months before the start

- When I receive the intramural form back from
the elective site, I will send you an email
message advising you whether or not you were
approved for the elective.

- ExtramuralsWhen I mail your applications out, I
will send you an email notifying you of the date
it was mailed.For extramurals, the site will
notify YOU and then you must notify ME by email.

35CANCELLATIONS
- You must cancel a minimum of 4 weeks before the
start date - You must cancel in writing preferably by email
to me, and also to the contact person listed
for the elective. - If already approved for one elective and the
start date is less than 4 wks away, you may not
cancel it, nor can you submit a different
elective request for that same time period.

39Think BEFORE You Submit
- Start gathering info now on- which specialty
interests you- which sites offer electives in
that specialty- what date their elective
applications will be available (some not
available until April or May)- what other
documents do they require and are yours
up-to-date (immunizations, HIPAA, BSIS) - Dont FLOOD the system only submit elective
requests that you intend to do, if approved. - Dont Panic or get Overwhelmed

- Were an important PARTNERSHIP!
- If you do your part correctly and completely,
then I will be able to process your applications
quicker and you have a better chance of getting
approved for the electives of your choice. - There are approximately 194 of YOU and there is
ONE of me. The process may seem slower than
youd like at first, but all will be processed.
