State Pharmacy Associations
  • Most of the state pharmacy associations formed in
    the 1870s and 1880s.
  • At that time the training of the pharmacist was
    accomplished largely through the apprenticeship
system and, in the absence of legal restrictions
it was possible for any persons to set themselves
    up as pharmacists.
  • A catalyst for the formation of state pharmacy
    associations was adulterated, contaminated and
snake oil products causing patient harm.

State Pharmacy Associations
  • Main activity initially for most states was the
formation of pharmacy laws requiring the
examination and licensing of pharmacies and
    pharmacists.
  • As a result, pharmacy emerged as a regulated
    health profession.
  • And state boards of pharmacies were created for
licensure and regulatory oversight of the
    profession.
