TV and Radio Stations for Rural Communities

Average Worldwide Construction Cost for Radio
Station and Radio Transmission System
  • _ Full power radio station cost more than
    500,000.
  • _500,000 is of course the price for a top of the
line radio transmission with all the possible
equipments that a radio transmission can have.
  • _This price does not include the cost of the
control room, which could possibly cost up to
    150,000.

3
Alternative Solution for Rural Communities of
Developing Countries
  • _The alternate solution for rural communities and
developing countries is low power radio
    transmission.
  • _The average worldwide cost for a low power radio
transmitter is around 41,700. This price is
again the price for a top of the line low power
    radio transmitter.
  • _The cost for a low power radio station is around
    23,600.
  • _The prices for the station and the transmitter
can be much lower if different types of material
    are used to build them.
  • _With the used of cheaper materials for the
shelter and the removal of uneccessary expensive
equipments, the price for the transmission can be
reduced down to less than 25,000
  • _The radio station is the same case, if lesser
materials are used to build it, the cost can be
    significantly reduced.

4
TV Station
  • _The average cost to operate TV station and have
it transmits signal to the entire rural regions
or countries is varied depend on the types of
transmission used. Two popular types of
transmission are PAL (phase alteration line) and
    NTSC.
  • _Both systems had relatively similar operating
system. PAL give better resolution, but it also
has some other problems that the NTSC system
    dont have.
  • _Overall the PAL and the NTSC systems are the
    same in most respects.
  • _The total NTSC transmission equipments cost
varied from 950,000 to 1,437,000. The master
control of the transmission cost around 182,000.

5
How Can Television be a Reality
  • _Television can easily be a reality in many
developing countries despite it high cost.
  • _Since television can be broadcast over a large
radius, a television station can be build by the
country, and not individual rural communities.
  • _This mean that all people in the country in
theory can have access to a TV channels
    broadcasts by their government.

6
Politics and the Stations
  • _TV stations and Radio stations are censored due
to the fact that most developing countries are
under a dictatorship or some other forms of a
    dictatorship government.
  • _TV stations and Radios stations are built by the
    state as propaganda tools.
  • _Sometimes they are not even allowed to be built
due to political reasons such a fearing the
    spread of unwanted ideology.
  • _Some politicians are actually encouraging the
creation of more stations to connect the country
together, to get the people in the country to be
    aware of the situation.
  • _This could actually lead to the building of more
    radio station in the country.
  • _In the end, politic can both hindered or helped
the advance of radio and TV in a country.

Rural Radio Africa's Internet
Farm radio broadcasters call for greater
collaboration Radio broadcasts provide a forum
for members of rural communities, especially
women, to express their opinions and share
experiences. Here, women in southern Mali
participate in a rural radio programme.

television. Photo FAO/S.Oumar
Most community radio stations, such as this one
in Mali, are under-funded and the majority of
workers in the sector are untrained volunteers.
