A Caveat or Two
  • This is an unscientific survey
  • There are other RIT departments using Facebook
that I did not have time to explore FYE, NTID,
    individual faculty and more….
  • There is no right way… it is the way that works
for you and your RIT mission

3
What is Facebook?
  • A commercial online social networking platform
that has over 70 million active users and 85
    percent of university market share
  • Currently 20, 654 people in the RIT Network

4
Who at RIT is Using Facebook?
  • Students, staff, faculty as individuals
  • Various departments such as Alumni Relations,
    Cooperative Education Career Services,
    University News, Information Security, RIT
    Orientation, Library, Saunders College of
Business, College of Imaging Arts Sciences,
Online Learning, RIT itself has a Page

Questions
  • How long have you been on Facebook as part of
    work?
  • How are you using Facebook for work?
  • Unexpected bonuses?
  • Unexpected downsides?
  • Has it helped you keep in touch with
    stakeholders?
  • Which features do you use most and least?
  • Are hoping to grow or shrink your presence?
  • Is there anyone you recommend as an
    interesting/creative Facebook user?

17
How long have you been on Facebook as part of
work?
  • 9-10 months
  • Less than a year
  • Maybe 1 year
  • Since February 2008
  • Since December 2007

18
How are you using Facebook for work?
  • Groups Pages
  • Connect alumni with the school and each other
  • Promote events
  • Advertise podcasts
  • To communicate with students
  • Cross promotion

19
Unexpected Bonuses
  • Quickness the viral aspect of people inviting
    friends to events AR
  • For example and NYC alum wanted to do a Happy
Hour and he started his own Alumni Event in NYC
  • Could trace some word of mouth building an
awareness among users that we were there
  • Grows without promoting it

20
Downsides
  • People sign up for events but do not attend
  • Both RIT Orientation and Information Security
lost networks of people Facebook was unwilling
    to retrieve data
  • Trying to avoid neglect of pages when not on
    Facebook all the time

21
Downsides
  • How do you measure your return on investement?
  • Facebook changes the rules
  • Difficult to describe this platform to people not
    on Facebook makes buy-in difficult
  • Can be difficult for a novice to customize
  • No customer service support

22
Has it helped you keep in touch with stakeholders?
  • Reconnecting with alumni and helping alumni
    reconnect with each other
  • Others had varying outcomes
  • RIT Orientation very successful

23
Which features do you use most and least?
  • Most Used
  • Postings
  • Events
  • Video
  • Photos
  • Wall
  • Least Used
  • Discussion Boards
  • Video
  • Applications

This really varies on purpose and audience. RIT
Orientation had overwhelming success with
Discussion Boards with enthusiastic freshmen who
had questions
24
Are hoping to grow or shrink your presence?
  • Everyone I spoke to was planning on maintaining
or growing their presence. No one is pulling
    back
  • Some are reevaluating what that presence is… a
group or a Fan Page but there is a concern about
what changing platforms does to friends/followers
    (will they move?)

25
  • Is there anyone you recommend as an
    interesting/creative Facebook user?

29
What to Think About
  • Who is my audience (inside RIT, outside RIT, or
    both)
  • Purpose awareness, pushing info, communicating,
    marketing, offering tools
  • Is my function appropriate for public
    broadcasting of information and contacts?
  • Does the informality of Facebook fit

30
What to Think About
  • Do you have time and staff to support?
  • How badly will you be hurt if the platform
    changes unexpectedly?
  • Will I do a Page or a Group?

31
Pages vs Groups
  • Pages allow tracking of statistics
  • Outside of RIT Network hidden
  • No statistics available for groups
  • Inside RIT Network easily seen

32
Pages
33
Groups
34
Interesting Uses
  • Coop hopes to have employers find their Page to
    help connect students with them
  • Alumni Relations has asked local chapter reps to
    start local Facebook groups
  • RIT Orientation used it to connect students with
each other before they were on campus and to help
    answer their common questions.

35
Interesting Uses
  • Coop is using RSS in Facebook to draw out news
    stories of interest to students
  • Dateline RIT is republishing existing content to
    expand distribution channels
  • Alumni Relations uses along with Alumni
Connections page over which they have more
    control to retain contact info

36
More Interesting Uses
37
Coop is Making Use of Video
38
Information Security Use of Discussion Boards
39
RIT Library Application

A Few Last Thoughts
  • Are you trying to build community?
  • Are you simply marketing with no need for two way
    communication?
  • Are you connecting people who are geographically
    separated?
  • Are you comfortable on a platform like this? If
not it may not be a good fit.
