National/International Scholarships Coordinator
  • raise awareness among students, faculty and staff
    of external scholarship opportunities such as the
    Rhodes, Marshall, Jack Kent Cooke, Hertz,
    Churchill, and Truman
  • identify and encourage qualified students to

Application Process

Characteristics of a Competitive Candidate
  • high GPA (recipients usually have 3.7 GPA)
  • research and/or internship experience
  • meaningful community or public service experience
  • leadership experience
  • strong relationships with faculty
  • study abroad experience, language skills
  • well rounded, passionate individual
  • clear sense of how further education will enable
    talents to be used for the greater good
  • researched scholarships and has applied only to
    those that are a strong match given
    qualifications and interests

  • Oldest of the international fellowships,
    initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in
    1902. Brings outstanding students from many
    countries around the world to the University of
    Oxford. The first American scholars were elected
    in 1904.
  • 32 scholars each year from the United States. The
    fifty states are divided into 16 districts, each
    of which elects two scholars.
  • Two years of study at the University of Oxford,
    with the possibility of renewal for a third year.
  • Scholars can pursue a second BA or a higher
    degree offered at Oxford including Bachelor of
    Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of
    Letters, Master of Science by Research or Doctor
    of Philosophy. Scholars are not permitted to
    pursue an MBA.
  • Program of study applicant desires must be
    available at Oxford and must be completed in two
    years.
  • October 2007 national deadline.

  • Marshall Scholarships were established in 1953 as
    a gesture of thanks to the people of the United
    States for assistance received under the Marshall
    Plan.
  • 40 scholarships are awarded each year. Eight
    regional panels are responsible for selection of
    recipients.
  • Two years of study at any British university,
    with the possibility of renewal for a third year.
    Degree program must be available at the
    university of an applicants choice and completed
    in two years. Commission doesnt fund MBA degree.
  • Applicants must indicate preferred institution,
    but the Commission decides final placement.
  • October 2007 national deadline.

  • The Mitchell Scholarship was established in 1998
    by the US-Ireland Alliance and is designed to
    introduce and connect generations of future
    American leaders to the island of Ireland, while
    recognizing and fostering intellectual
    achievement, leadership, and a commitment to
    public service and community.
  • 12 scholarships are awarded each year.
  • One year of study at any university in Ireland or
    Northern Ireland. Applicants must indicate
    preferred institution, but the Mitchell program
    decides final placement.
  • October 2007 national deadline.

  • The Jacob Javits provides fellowships to students
    of superior academic abilityselected on the
    basis of demonstrated achievement, financial
    need, and exceptional promiseto undertake study
    at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in
    selected fields of arts, humanities, and social
    sciences.
  • Scholarship continues for lesser of two years or
    completion of degree.

  • U.S. citizen
  • pursuing a doctorate or terminal masters degree
    in an eligible field of study (list of fields of
    study is online)
  • Applicants must be seniors or graduate students
    who have not yet completed one year of graduate
    education.
  • Must use scholarship at an accredited U.S.
    university. Foreign institutions are not
    eligible.
  • Must demonstrate financial need by filing the
    FAFSA.

First Steps
  • Research scholarships to become fully aware of
    eligibility requirements, selection criteria,
    application process, deadlines, etc. Apply only
    for those awards for which you are a strong
    match.
  • Complete the Preliminary Application and return
    to the National/International Scholarship
    Coordinator by June 1, 2007.
  • Over the summer, begin drafting your personal
    statement. Arrange for letters of recommendation.
  • Stay in close contact with the National/Internatio
    nal Scholarship Coordinator regarding your
    application.
  • Be aware of and meet the internal application
    deadline.
