Controlled Substances Schedules

• Schedule I
• The substance has high potential for abuse and
• The substance has no accepted medical use in
  treatment in the United States.
• Schedule II
• The substance has high potential for abuse
• The substance has currently accepted medical use
  in treatment in the United States and
• The abuse of the substance may lead to severe
  psychological or physical dependence.

• Schedule III-V
• The potential for abuse for each schedule is less
  than the substances listed before
• The substance has currently accepted medical use
  in treatment in the United States and
• Abuse of the substance may lead to moderate or
  limited physical dependence or psychological
  dependence.

RECORD KEEPING

• All records must be maintained for a minimum of
  2 years and be readily retrievable (within
  48hrs).
• CIII-CV should be stamped with a red C 1 in ht.
  in the lower right hand corner.
• Keep schedule II separate from schedules III-V.
• Attach schedule II invoices to the DEA form 222.

Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Number

• Verifying a DEA number
• 1st Letter is either an A,B,F or M
• 2nd Letter is the first letter of the physicians
  last name
• Add the 1st,3rd and 5th numbers
• Add the 2nd,4th, and 6th numbers multiply the
  sum by 2
• Add BOTH sums of numbers together
• The last number of this sum should match the 7th
  digit in the DEA number

DEA Verification Example

• What should be the 7th digit for Dr. Andrew
  Shedlocks DEA number (BS452589)?
• Add 42814 then
• Add 55919 multiply 19x238 then
• Add 14 3852
• The last in the DEA should be 2
• Therefore the correct DEA for Dr. Shedlock is
  BS4525892.

MAILING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES

• The US Post Office will not allow the mailing of
  controlled substances.
• Other postal services (such as FedEx or UPS) will
  allow controlled substances to be mailed BUT the
  outside of the label of the package is to be
  unmarked so it cannot be identified.

  distributions and control of the investigational
  drugs which includes
• Procurement
• Storage
• Inventory management
• Packaging
• Labeling
• Distribution
• And disposition of unused drugs

• The pharmacy must provide clinical services such
  as
• Patient education
• Staff in-service training
• Monitoring
• And reporting of adverse affects
