Why eLearning?
  • Long Term Objectives
  • Securing an educational platform that will ensure
that our global logistics team develops
competencies using common tools / programs.
  • That we have the opportunity to standardize our
approach to certain aspects of the business.
  • Developing organizational synergies by ensuring a
certain level of redundancy between sites by
having a resource pool that substitutes and
    supports across sites as needed.

Deliverables
Why eLearning?
  • 1. To determine if e-learning is an appropriate
vehicle to achieve our general objective i.e.
does it truly offer the opportunity to globalize
    our training and development efforts.
  • 2. To establish the merits of the Leading Edge
    e-learning system.
  • 3. To test user acceptance of the concept.
  • 4. To test the robustness of the competency
    transfer.
  • 5. A preliminary recommendation on the extent to
    which customization would be required.

  • The Results

26
eLearning Results
General
  • Compares very favorably to other pilots.
  • Content comprehensive appropriate.
  • Team approach to exercises positive, builds
    communication, discussion, debate.
  • Can learn at own pace.
  • High self discipline required to stay on track.
  • Positive opportunity to maximize own time.
  • Applicable to other levels in organization.
  • Requirement for hard copies of modules.

27
Final Exam
eLearning Results
  • Examination considered tough but worthwhile
  • Multiple choice questions
  • Questions considered lengthy and alike
  • All students were successful

28
eLearning Results
Depth of Content
  • Material
  • Very good
  • Understandable
  • Appropriate level of depth
  • Presentation
  • Easy on the eye
  • Manageable chunks
  • Layout/navigation of site is easy
  • Articles
  • Feedback thin on ground due to time constraints
  • General feeling is that articles are
    comprehensive appropriate
  • Examples
  • Better than other similar SP courses

29
eLearning Results
Procedural Viewpoint
  • A launch meeting would have been beneficial
  • initial confusion
  • mandate and initial approach was insufficient
  • people still need to come together before kick
    off
  • Happy sheets from HR to be issued as part of
    launch to monitor views
  • Initial tech issues led to delays in embracing
    the pilot
  • Quality output from the mentor was high
  • Our use of mentor was low (refer to our time
    constraints)
  • Feedback from the mentor to the sponsor is an
    area for development
  • (This needs to be more frequent formalized)
  • Group sessions with mentor, takes the distance
    out of distance learning

30
eLearning Results
Time Perspective
  • Needs of the day prioritized over pilot
  • Time not structured, but rather, intense bursts
    of activity
  • Necessitated staying back after work to get
    'quality' time
  • Difficult to arrange suitable times for working
    initially
  • High self discipline required to stay on track
  • Greater feeling commit 'by people to people',
    when meeting to do exercises
  • Positive opportunity to maximize own time
  • (versus time lost travelling to/from lectures,
elapsed time vs. learning time in lectures)

eLearning Results
Overall View of Participants
  • Compares favourably to other pilots
  • Can see benefits opportunities
  • Applicable to other levels in organization
  • Would be applicable as a means of learning -
    provides a broad view
  • Would be a good Performance Management Process
    Tool
  • Would need to be more formalized to succeed
  • Link to formal accreditation would lead to
    greater commitment
