Hamsters and Their Food
  • Hamsters like dried food e.g dried bananas, and
most pet shops sell hamster mix which includes
wheat, barley, rolled oats, maize, peanuts,
    sun-flower seeds, pellets and biscuit.
  • Hamsters also enjoy a selection of fresh fruit
and some vegetables such as carrots and swede.
Some hamsters also enjoy the odd leaf of lettuce.
  • Be careful when giving special foods to your
hamster as too many treats are not good for it.
  • If you watch a hamster eat, you may be surprised
how much food they can eat at a time. This is
perfectly normal as hamsters have cheek pouches
where they store the food that has been given to
them so they can eat it another time.

Exercise
  • Everyone needs to exercise including
hamsters.Even 10 minutes or so is enough.
  • If you are going to let your hamster out for a
    run
  • DO NOT let it out into a garden
  • let it out in a place with small places and
    holes,
  • let it near another animal.
  • If you are going to let it out for a run a good
place is in the bath ( make sure there is no
    water in it first though!).
  • Here is a picture of an exercise ball. It has a
secure lid and air holes. The hamster is put
inside with the lid ON and runs moving the ball
    by itself.

Where To Keep It
  • If you decide to have a hamster as a pet it will
    need a cage.
  • Make sure there is enough space for
  • A water bottle
  • A food bowl
  • Lots of space for its bed/ing
  • An exercising wheel or other toy
  • Something to gnaw on
  • Here are three pictures of a cage taken from
three different angles. Not all cages have extra
levels but this one has. Dont worry if your cage
hasnt another level, one floor is just as good.

Handling Your Hamster
  • If you want your hamster to come to you try
tempting it with food ( do not pretend to have
food that is cruel). As soon as it is near you
speak softly to it and stroke it gently. The
picture opposite is a perfect example on how to
    hold a hamster correctly.
