- ILE-IFE, NIGERIA.
- First African Leadership Conference on Space
Science and Technology for Sustainable
Development, Abuja, Nigeria. November 23-25, 2005.

6Space Science and Technology Dev. in Africa
- MITIGATING FACTORS
- Low GDP/huge external debts IMF/World Bank
loans. - Lack of basic infrastructures (electricity,
water, etc.) - Limited space research/development programmes.
- Brain drain syndrome (scarcity of experts) huge
costs of training personnel, attractive/better
opportunities abroad. - Unstable science education policies
uncoordinated national/regional scientific
activities (priorities) and colonial differences. - Myriads of social problems famine, high-level
illiteracy, poverty, hunger, war, etc.
7SPACE EDUCATION
- motivation and the relevance
- approach, curricula and techniques the national
agenda. - role of science teachers.
- training requirements.
- workshops/seminars (e.g. WORLD SPACE WEEK, etc.)

21Space Research Development
- National space agencies Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt,
South Africa (Feb. 06) - Knowledge xfer SSTL (Microsatellite projects
AlgeriaSat-1, NigeriaSat-1) - Applications tele-medicine, tele-education
- Private sector participation spin-offs
- Regional collaborative efforts (SA-Sunsat project)
22Partnering collaboration
- UN-OOSA, UNESCO, WMO, UNEP, UNDP, FAO, etc.
- NASA, ESA, India, China, etc.
- USAID, SAREC, SIDA, etc.
- Regional Collaborations
- African Institute for Space Science (AISS).
23New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD)
- .. a programme of action for the redevelopment
of the African continent - It addresses key social, economic
(technological) and political priorities in a
coherent and balanced manner.
24In the future ..
- To promote regional participation of Africans in
PGD programme in SST through the provision of
scholarships. - RS/GIS is the most attractive option.
- Promote regional collaboration and sharing of
resources/facilities among African countries. - NEPAD is a relevant instrument for promoting
space education and capacity building for Africa.
25Thank you.
