    Volunteer Services

23
Applications
  • The process
  • After families have attended a Family
Orientation, they send information to Habitat
  • When a selection process begins, families are
    mailed applications
  • As applications are returned, they are checked
    for completeness
  • How you can help
  • Mail applications
  • 1 day
  • Check applications and documents
  • 4-8 hours per week for approximately 2 weeks

24
File Underwriting
  • The process
  • Volunteers are trained in the underwriting
    process by professionals
  • Underwriting committees meet to review the credit
    worthiness of families
  • Habitat is looking for credit worthy families,
    not credit perfect families
  • How you can help
  • Become part of an underwriting committee
  • Several hours per week for three weeks of
    training and meeting

25
Information Sessions
  • The process
  • Families with qualifying credit, as determined by
the underwriting committee, are asked to attend
    an Information Session
  • Information Sessions present what it means to be
a Habitat family and what to expect throughout
    the program
  • How you can help
  • Help conduct Information Sessions
  • Several hours per information session, sessions
    conducted for three weeks

26
Home Interviews
  • The process
  • Volunteers, in teams of two, make home visits to
interview the family and observe living condition
  • Each team will visit at least two families
  • Home visit volunteers have a Selection Meeting to
rank families based on need and willingness to
    partner with Habitat
  • Home visit volunteers write recommendation
letters to the Board of Directors
  • How you can help
  • Make visits to the homes of families
  • Several hours per week for three weeks

27
Family Partnering
  • The process
  • Once families have joined the Habitat program,
they are partnered with a mentor
  • The Family Partner establishes a one-on-one bond
with the Program family to guide them through the
    process
  • The Partner is a liaison between Habitat and the
    family
  • The Partner assists the family in monitoring
    Sweat Equity hours
  • The Partner assists in media interviews of the
    family
  • The Partner helps the family obtain answers to
    questions
  • How you can help
  • Work with a family throughout the process
  • Up to two years (dependent on how long it takes
to build the house and complete Sweat Equity)
  • Continue to mentor the family for up to one year
    after they have moved in

28
Homeowners Associations
  • The process
  • When more than one Habitat home is built in a
community, a Homeowners Association is formed
  • These Homeowners Associations are assisted and
    monitored by volunteers
  • How you can help
  • Serve as a mentor by attending homeowners
    association meetings
  • Help conduct audits of homeowners associations

29
Volunteers are Important!
  • The family selection process relies on the
dedication of volunteers at every step
  • Volunteer family partners enrich the lives of
Habitat families and help them to become
    successful homeowners
  • Continued support from volunteers helps our
communities and our ministry grow stronger
