Daily ReportSee example attached
  • Each child receives a new Daily Report sheet on
    Monday morning.
  • This stays in their GO folderALWAYSuntil
Friday when it can be thrown away!
  • This is where they write their homework
assignment, behavior color at the end of each
day and the special for the next day.
  • I check it at the end of each day. When they are
ready and prepared to go home with appropriate
    homework items I initial it!
  • After they finish their homework at home, it is
  • their responsibility to have a parent
initial their Daily Report sheet and make sure it
is back in their GO folder to bring back the next
    morning.

9
Daily Report continued ...
  • If a child does not bring back
  • 1) homework or 2) GO folder or 3)Daily Report
sheet, they will move their stick if it happens
twice. This is a simple exercise in
remembering that they can handle to promote
    personal responsibility.
  • After school on Friday, the Daily Report sheet
may be read and discarded as the students will
get a new one on Monday!
  • Please, help reinforce the responsibility
aspect of this simple daily routine as it will
help establish good habits for your child.

READ ! ?Lunch Money,Transportation Change, note
to teacher...
  • If your child has a transportation change for the
end of the day, please be sure to send in a note
addressed to Mrs. McKinney with the information.
I cannot send your child home any other way than
his/her usual mode of travel if I do not have a
    note from you.
  • If the change is made after your child is at
school, notify the office to make the change.
Please, do not call and leave a phone message
for me in the afternoon. If it is urgent , it
may not work in getting the message to me in
time. I cannot guarantee that I will see e-mail
messages or be able to check voice mail due to
instruction time in the afternoon. Though I try
to respond to e-mail promptly and quickly, the

day in reward for good things they do! They even
    get tickets for classroom donations!
  • They automatically earn 5 tickets at the end of
the day for staying on Green, too!
  • Near the last day of grading period, we have OUR
STORE day when the students will count their
tickets into groups of ten and they are able to

15
Treat people right do the right thingeven if
you dont feel like it!Jobs and Star Student of
the Week
  • Each child will have a responsibility in the
    classroom each week!
  • Each student will have the opportunity to be the
Start Student of the Week during the year

Me Book to do through the
    week
Estimation Station items in Bag - Class
    estimates

    Picture on classroom wall

    Photographs to share
    - sometimes used as a Story Starter
  • Every student has the chance of being named the
Role Model of the Week for the Weekly Character
Trait or Life Rule that we all try to exemplify
through the week and year. This can be
recognized by Mrs. McKinney or a related arts
teacher. Ask your child about the Life Rule or
the Character Trait of the week and discuss them
    at home.
  • Never let them settle for less than their best!

16
Flexible Grouping - Math
  • I am pleased that your child will have Flexible
Grouping for Math. Mrs. McKinneys class and
Mrs. Skinners class across the hall will be
exchanging classes for our Math Groups after
pre-testing for skill level on various
    chapters/units.
  • The students will work in their ability range
for that chapter in math. Their previous
knowledge may be stronger for some chapters and
weaker in others. This forum will address their
capabilities and allow for better understanding
and retention of the new concepts. It will also
allow those that are ready to move on a chance
to do exactly that and be challenged as well!
Flexible grouping will begin after we have
    reviewed, assessed and introduced basic
fundamentals in these first several weeks of
    school.
  • I look forward to this opportunity for your
childs success. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me.

17
Extra Effort
  • Book in desk from home or library! Every child
should have a book in their desk from home, the
library or from our reading spot to pull out for
continued reading at free time periods. Ask your
child now and then, what book he/she is reading
    throughout the day.
  • Educational Sharing Day - monthly - Voluntary
and very beneficial! Your child gets to teach
for a 5 minute period on something that they have
studied, collected, researched on the internet or
in books or demonstrate a simple experiment or
activity for the class. The topic is up to them!
The dates will be at the end of each month and
will be announced /or in my newsletter ahead of
time. Each child wanting to share must come
prepared to teach that day and ready to go! They
may have hand-outs for the class, too, if they
wish. I will take pictures and post them on our
Ed Sharing Wall in the Hallway!

18
More Extra Effort
  • Sunshine Math Practice in Problem-solving.
Sent home on Monday and is due Friday morning.
Every child is expected to turn it in for a
    participation grade. Parental assistance is
welcome. Please initial the paper before student
    turns it in.
  • Book-It - Begins in October, ends in March.
Sponsored by Pizza Hut. Each child participates
by reading each day and recording the minutes
that they have read on their Book-It Calendar.
They have a goal of at least 350 minutes a month.
I like them to log the names of the books they
have read so they may use it as a reminder list
in taking AR tests. The Book-It calendar and
book title log are due to Mrs. McKinney at the
end of each month. If the reading goal is met,
the student will receive a small certificate from
Pizza Hut for a free Personal Pan Pizza!
  • Writers Station - A free-time activity
  • Keyboarding Center A free time activity
  • Artists of the Day A free time activity

19
Extra Effort..continued
  • Accelerated Reader (AR) - This program is
sponsored and rewarded by the LRES library, PTO
parent volunteers, and teachers. It is an
excellent program! Although I put AR in the
Extra Effort category, it is a required activity
in my class and I expect each of the children to
participate. As always, the children will be
able to spend points they earn at the AR store
during designated times throughout the school
year. We will take a quiz on AR for each of our
    reading stories as well.
  • Research Round-Up! - Self-motivated research on
    States and Presidents.
  • Reading Rings - This will be offered later in the
first semester. A Reading Ring is like a tiny
book report on a card a bit bigger than a
bookmark. The student is to write the title,
main characters, main idea, and their favorite
part of the story. On the other side of the
card, they draw a small picture of their favorite
part and rate the book from one to four stars.
When turned in and approved, they may add the
card to their Reading Ring on the special
bulletin board. If a student meets the goal
given for that month in number of Reading Ring
cards written and approved, they will have their
choice of Lunch with the Teacher or another
incentive offered by the teacher. (This can work
hand in hand with Book-It and Accelerated Reader.
The students will be assigned to do a Reading
Ring for each story in reading as well.)
