Title: EOT and Cyberinfrastructure

1
EOT and Cyberinfrastructure
  • Dr. Fran Berman
  • Director, SDSC and NPACI
  • HPC Chair, Dept. of Computer Science and
    Engineering, UCSD

2
What is cyberinfrastructure?
  • Cyberinfrastructure is the development of
    infrastructure based upon distributed computer,
    information and communication technologies
  • The focus is on integration, usability and
    end-to-end solutions
  • National Science Foundations Cyberinfrastructure

3
Why Cyberinfrastructure?
  • Today, science is conducted by global teams using
    sophisticated combinations of
  • People
  • Computers
  • Networks
  • Viz
  • data storage
  • remote instruments
  • other resources
  • Cyberinfrastructureprovides a way tointegrate
    resourcesto support modernapplications

4
How are we building cyberinfrastructure?
  • Integrated services approach allows users to
pick from a menu of resources and services to
develop applications on an integrated resource
    platform.

5
EOT and Cyberinfrastructure
  • Cyberinfrastructure has enormous potential to
impact the way people use technology.
  • Key foci of cyberinfrastructure are
  • Access to remote resources (computers, data
    collections, instruments, etc.)
  • The ability to integrate groups of resources to
    support applications
  • Achievement of the cyberinfrastructure vision
will benefit a wide spectrum of users at all
    levels

6
Cyberinfrastructure Outreach and Training
Challenges
  • Key Questions
  • How do we identify users who will benefit from
    cyberinfrastructure?
  • How do we introduce new users and new communities
    to cyberinfrastructure?
  • Not the same as showing users how to program BH
  • How do we make cyberinfrastructure easy to use?
  • How can we get users involved in evaluating and
    improving cyberinfrastructure?

7
Education new paradigms for a new generation
  • For K-12, collaboration and coordination are
    default modes of interaction
  • The Internet
  • Napster
  • RPG
  • How will science change when its in their hands?

Cyberinfrastructure Education Challenges
  • How do we develop curriculum for a new generation
of tech-savvy students comfortable in cyberspace?
  • Assume the web
  • Assume IM
  • Assume that everything is available and
    everything is free (Napster)
  • Assume that you can adapt to things in real time
    (RPG)
  • Assume that none of the resources have to be
    where you are (the Internet)

EOT and Cyberinfrastructure
  • EOT will be critical to ensure real success for
    cyberinfrastructure
  • Cyberinfrastructure provides an opportunity to
push the envelope to enable both a new generation
of science and a new generation of users
  • At this juncture, there is an opportunity to
develop a far-reaching plan for the role of EOT
    in cyberinfrastructure.
