3
Purpose of Program
  • One-Team, One-Book helps advance our School
Improvement goal of excellence in reading and
writing by combining team work, personal growth,
and academic achievement in an extra-curricular
    setting.
  • Coach chooses a book to read with the team
  • School purchases the books for students to keep

4
Influence of the Coach
  • Many youngsters assign value and meaning to a
topic of study by virtue of who teaches it rather
than to any inherent quality of the specific
subject matter. Coaches and physical educators
who emphasize the need to read, underscore
literacy or academic as well as athletic
    achievement, and read themselves, influence
players and students toward these endeavors. By
making reading an integral part of athletic
development or stressing the virtues of thought
and performance, educators working in these areas
help to show young people that using their heads
in conjunction with their bodies is a worthwhile
pursuit and is extremely significant for happy,
healthy, and wholesome living. Pg. 68-9 USING
SPORTS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION TO STRENGTHEN
READING SKILLS, Lance M. Gentile, IRA Reading
    Aids Series, 1980.
