2Introduction
UNDP Cambodia started in mid-2005 the
implementation of two Small Grants Programmes to
promote community based environment-livelihoods
initiative namely (1) the GEF Small Grant
Programme, executed by UNOPS and (2) the EC
UNDP Small Grants Programme for Operations to
Promote Tropical Forests (SGP PTF), a European
Commission (EC) funded, executed by the SEAMEO
Regional Centre for Graduate Study and Research
in Agriculture (SEARCA).
3Objective
The two Small Grants Programmes (SGPs) work by
directly providing grants and technical support
to NGOs and Community Based Organizations (CBOs).
The GEF SGP is funding activities related to
environmental protection and livelihood develops,
adaptation to climate change and land
degradation. The SGP PTF funded activities
related to the forest dependant poor, in
particular livelihood and capacity building
initiatives which promote the sustainable use of
forest resources.
4Types of Project Funded
- SGP PTF
- Project funded ranges from 25,000 USD to 70,000
USD - Major activities including community based
natural resource management (CBNRM), small
business for income generation and integrate
agriculture production, promote social capital,
demonstrated and piloted innovative technologies,
and reforestation.
- GEF SGP
- Project funded ranges from 10,000 USD to 50,000
USD - The main projects interventions are
transformation from bio-gas into energy, organic
farming (SRI) in protected area, women
empowerment in community fishery management, sea
grass protection and mangrove reforestation etc.
5Overall Expected Outputs (SGP PTF)
Target areas 166 villages, 41 communes, 14
provinces. CBNRM Community Based Natural
Resource Management, CF Community Forestry, CBT
Community-Based Eco-Tourism, CPA Community in
Protected Area, PLUP Participatory Land Use

7Lessons Learned
- SGP PTF and GEF SGP in Cambodia have been joint
together to reduce costs through combined
planning activities sharing a joint programme
launching, a joint National Steering Committee
(NSC) meeting, joint orientation meeting,
equipment and field works, etc. - 2. The inclusion of government agencies during
project selection process and field works
provided an opportunity to establish working
partnerships with the government agencies. - Grant coordination meeting is a good network for
sharing information and experiences in order to
support grantees.
