Title: Seattle Food System Enhancement Project

1
Seattle Food System Enhancement Project
University of Washington - Program on the
Environment Environmental Management Certificate
Program
2005-2006 Project
Phase 3 Findings and Recommendations
Described findings and recommendations
including 1) increase neighborhood food
access 2) increase sale/availability of
locally/regionally grown food 3) increase urban
food production 4) recover/recycle food from the
waste stream 5) organize and enhance City
response to food issues
Phase 1 - Partnership Collaborated with City of
Seattle and other partners to characterize the
local food system.
Phase 2 - Analysis Researched the study of food
systems and interviewed local stakeholders to
validate models developed in Phases 1 2.
The 2005-2006 Food System Enhancement Project and
the Mayors Climate Action Plan prompted the
City to ask additional questions about the local
food system. The 2006-2007 Food System
Enhancement Project is thus designed to 1)
Better understand residents experience of the
food system in specific neighborhoods 2)
Investigate the relationship between the food
system and climate change.
2006-2007 Project
Conduct a Neighborhood Food Assessment of two
Seattle neighborhoods to identify issues
residents have concerning food accessibility,
affordability, and availability. Research will
include focus groups and an analysis of
socioeconomic status, demographics, and community
food resources.
Quantify and Compare Greenhouse Gas Emissions
from the production and manufacturing of 4 food
items produced by the conventional food network,
and the same items when grown organically/locally/
regionally.
