Our Commitment To Caring For The Environment
Began With Our FounderDr. Forrest C. Shaklee
He was a leader, a visionary and a pioneer in the
environmental movement His interest in health
and the environment began at birth In 1915, he
formulated his famous words Living In Harmony
With Nature In 1960, he introduced Basic-H,
the forerunner of our household product line
4
EPA Studies Show Indoor Pollution Much Higher
Than Outdoor Pollution
Since 1950, 70,000 new chemicals have been
invented, dispersed and allowed into our
environment. Only a fraction of these chemicals
have been tested for toxicity. We are by default
conducting a massive clinical toxicology trial
and our children and their children are the
experimental animals.
  • 150 Chemicals Found In The Home Are Linked To
  • Allergies (Asthma Respiratory)
  • Birth Defects
  • Cancer (Leukemias)
  • Psychological (Dyslexia, ADD/ADHD Autism)
  • Most Vulnerable
  • Infants Small Children
  • Chronically ill
  • Elderly
  • All of us are affected

5
How Common Are These Chemicals Where In Our
World Are They?
  • Chemicals Found Just In Personal Care Products
  • 884 are toxic
  • 148 cause tumors
  • 218 cause reproductive complications (including
    endocrine disruptions)
  • 778 cause acute toxicity
  • 314 cause biological mutations
  • 378 cause skin respiratory irritation
  • Source United States House of Representatives

None of these chemicals are used in Shaklee
products
  • Household Chlorine Bleaches (claim to disinfect)
  • Are classified as a pesticide (Hazardous
    Substance Act)
  • Mixing with ammonia produces chloramines,
    possibly causing
  • coughing
  • suffocation
  • loss of voice
  • endocrine disruption
  • burning lungs
  • Pesticide Poisonings Out of 2,435 pesticide
poisonings in a one year period, 40 were
  • due to exposure to disinfectant cleaners in
    the home.

6
How Common Are These Chemicals Where In Our
World Are They?
  • As More Toxins Are Introduced
  • They accumulate store within our bodies (in
    adipose tissue)
  • Over the last 20 to 30 years, 100 of people
    tested have 1,4 Dichlorobenzene
  • (used in household deodorizers and room
    fresheners)
  • Breathing and/or touching these toxins may cause
    symptoms
  • Toxins store and accumulate within the body
    (possibly causing endocrine disruption and
    cancer)
  • Most laundry detergents contain
  • NTA (known carcinogenic endocrine disruption)
  • Ammonium Hydroxide
  • Phosphates
  • Toxic vapors fumes

None of these chemicals are used in Shaklee
products
7
Example Of What Toxic Contamination Can Cause
  • Asthma
  • Once very rare
  • Over the last 20 years, 30 million Americans
    affected
  • In one decade, 42 increase
  • Childrens asthma increased by 40
  • Asthma death in children, and young people,
    increased by 118
  • Children's visits to doctors Most common
    complaint Respiratory
  • Children are more vulnerable to toxins (our kids
    have stacked odds)
  • Systems are not developed
  • They are closer to the toxic surfaces
  • Breathe 3 times to an adults 1
  • From birth to age 13 months no ability to
fight biological and neurological effects of
    toxic
  • chemicals
  • Todays children are exposed to more dangerous
    toxins than were current adults
  • Children have more time to trigger disease
  • Exposed earlier
  • Respiratory
  • Long latency period
  • Cancers leukemias

  • Question What Is A Climate Neutral Enterprise?
  • A company that has eliminated its total impact
on the Earths climate by reducing
  • and offsetting its Green House Gas Emissions.
  • Question How does a company become certified
    Climate Neutral?
  • First, at Shaklee, we had to implement energy
    conservation measures
  • throughout the entire company.
  • Conduct a comprehensive inventory of CO2
    emissions of our entire company
  • operations Dock to Dock.
  • Our total CO2, or Green House Gas Emission total
    footprint, was 25,000 tons.
  • Shaklee selected and funded CO2 Offset
    Projects
  • Solar electricity
  • Coalbed methane recovery and utilization
  • Energy updates for Portland, Oregon Public
    Schools
  • Joined with American Forest in the planting of
    1,135,000 trees,
  • called Seeds of Hope.
  • Upon achieving a net-zero CO2 footprint on the
    Earth, Shaklee became the
  • first Climate Neutral certified company in
    the world.

Roger BarnettPresident/CEO Shaklee Corporation
Our new owner, Roger Barnett is the epitome of
social responsibility. Roger is keenly committed
to the environment. He sees it as a powerful
brand to the Shaklee name and how it
differentiates us from other companies.  As a
young man he lived and studied in Kenya, and saw
for himself some of the environmental challenges
occurring there. He is very interested in all
environmental issues and the history of Shaklees
environmental commitment.   In keeping with his
passion for the environment, and Shaklees
history of environmental responsibility, he has
invited a true heroine and Nobel Peace Prize
winner Wangari Maathai to speak at our 2005
national conference in Chicago.
20
WANGARI MAATHAI
  • First African woman to become a Nobel Peace
    Laureate
  • Born in 1940 in village near Nairobi, Kenya
  • Streams were clean
  • Rivers full of tadpoles
  • Trees plentiful
  • 1960 earned Kennedy Scholarship to University of
    Pittsburg
  • 1966 returned to Kenya was shocked at the
    degradation
  • of forests and farmland
  • trees were clear-cut
  • lack of firewood, water and food caused warring
  • between village tribes
  • agri-farming had replaced family farms
  • rivers were gone lack of water
  • Planted trees with help of citizen foresters -
women who shared her concern at the loss of
  • water, timber and farmland. They started The
    Green Belt Movement (GBM).
  • In 30 years they planted 30 million trees in
East Africa. A lush green belt of trees.
  • Kenyans could farm again, raise crops, have
plentiful firewood and timber for building, use
    the
  • fruit of the trees, sell timber and the water
    returned.
  • In 2001 Wangari was elected to Parliament

In Harmony With Nature

Over a hundred years ago Henry Thoreau
said It is true that a corporation has no
conscience but a corporation with a philosophy,
plus committed, conscientious and compassionate
men and women is a corporation with a
conscience. The good environment of our planet
is crucial this is not a dress rehearsal! There
is NO fate waiting to be revealed   What we do
NOW will determine the fate of our planet.
In the moment of commitment, the universe
conspires to assist you. - Goethe
Our commitment to caring for the environment and
wellness is a 50 year commitment, started by Dr.
Shaklee and continued today by Roger Barnett. It
important to the branding of the Shaklee name. It
is WHO WE ARE! It is what we stand for.
