1
Teaching/Learning the Writing Process of a Short
Story10/11 years old Grade 5/6
  • Created by Kristy LaPorte

2
Lesson Objectives
  • Given a handout on the writing process, a handout
how to use the computer, and a computer, the
students will be able to write a story using the
correct form of the writing process
(introduction, two full body paragraphs, and a
    conclusion)

3
Lesson Objectives
  • The students will be able to successfully use the
    computer with internet links (www.kidspiration.com
    and www.highlightskids.com) to further their
understanding and enhance their learning on the
    writing process.

4
Introduce the Learning Activity
  • I would start by telling the students Today we
will learn to write a story using the correct
form for the writing process. It is important to
know the steps of the writing process before we
attempt to start writing a story. (The students
will already have their topics that they want to
write about when they have mastered the steps)

5
Provide Information
  • We will first go into the computer lab. There, I
will start by asking the students what they
already know about writing and if they know
    anything about its process.

6
Provide Information
  • Then, I will hand out a sheet that is called The
Writing Process to the students. We will then
read all of the steps to make sure that everyone
knows what the steps are requiring and if there
are no questions, I will have the students start
    writing their story.

7
Provide Information
  • Once the students have finished writing their
story, they are able to go online to
www.kidspiration.com and go to download a free
trial and try this site out and they can also go
to www.highlightskids.com and go to story soup on
the left hand column (click this) and then on the
upper right hand side you will see a box named
story adventure, you decide what happensGO
(click this) and the students will be able to
read the story and finish it their own way.

8
Provide Practice
  • Everyday for a week, I will start each class by
reviewing the writing process. The students will
continue to work on several short stories and
having the opportunity to continue to use the two
    different websites.

9
Provide Knowledge of Results
  • As the students are writing and using the
websites each day, I will go around form student
to student watching them to make sure that they
are on the right track. I will make sure to tell
them, verbally, what they are doing excellent on
and if they are not doing something properly, I
will tell them in a positive way what they need
to change or I will talk to them in person at my
desk if further teaching is necessary.

10
Provide Knowledge of Results
  • I will continue to praise the students for all of
the work they have done and that I know that they
can do it if they take their time at it. When
each student is finished with a short story, they
will come to my desk and we will critique it
together. We will discuss what is right with it
or not, what words are misspelled, and so on.

11
Review the Activity
  • At the end of each day, we will discuss as a
class what the writing process is and how it
helps us when we are writing a story.

12
Review the Activity
  • Once we have discussed that, we will then go
around to each and every student as ask them what
they thought worked on that day and how the
writing process has helped them individually.

13
Method of Assessment
  • In order to assess that the students have
correctly learned how to write a story using the
writing process steps, I would individually read
their finished product stories and grade them
after one week is over and I will give each
student a quiz on the writing process.

14
Method of Assessment
  • For the quiz, I will have a short story that will
be handed out and each student has to put the
correct names of each part of the story.
