3
What is it?
  • Differs from Works Cited (just the sources you
    cite)
  • Each entry starts with a bibliographic entry in
    MLA format
  • HELPFUL SOURCE www.citationmachine.net
  • Annotation begins with a written overview of the
contents of the resource (what does it contain?)
  • Next 2 3 specific details from the source
  • Finally, 2-3 sentences evaluating the usefulness
of this source for your research

4
Why Do It?
  • encourages you to think critically about the
content of the works you are using, their place
within a field of study, and their relation to
    your own research and ideas.
  • proves you have read and understand your sources.
  • establishes your work as a valid source and you
    as a competent researcher.
  • situates your study and topic in a continuing
    professional conversation.

5
What are credible sources?
  • Books written by experts in the field
  • Magazine articles written by experts or
    knowledgeable/respected journalists
  • Newspaper articles in respected newspapers
  • Scholarly and/or peer-reviewed journals
  • Personal Interviews
  • Published business plans

6
What are NOT credible sources?
  • Wikipedia (too unreliable)
  • Web pages that have no author
  • Web pages that have no business or higher
    education institute affiliated with them

7
Scholarly and Peer-reviewed Journals Research
Databases
  • Columbus Metro Library Reference Page
  • http//www.columbuslibrary.org/reference/
  • Library Card often required
  • Be sure to check full text in search!
  • New Albany High School Library
  • http//curriculum.new-albany.k12.oh.us/rkrabach/we
    bpage.htm
  • School login required
  • These sources, while obtained via the internet,
do NOT count as internet sources because they
    are available in print.

8
Example from a magazine article
  • Bjerklie, David, Andrew Dorfman, Dan Cray et al.
Global Warming. Time Magazine 3 April 2006
    31-38.
  • With contributions by reporters in seven cities
    across the United States
  • and Europe, this article is a giant and detailed
    overview of climate change,
  • exploring all its causes and effects. It begins
    by proving that global warming
  • exists, and then describes the damage it has
caused in all areas of the
  • planet. It explains what humans are doing and
    should be doing about the
  • problem. The article was most useful for the many
    figures and statistics it
  • provided. It is easy to read and navigate, as it
    is organized with sub-
  • headings such as CO2 at the poles and
    Drought. This article will be
  • helpful both for specifics and to increase
    general understanding of the topic.

9
If using personal interviews . . .
  • Citation is simply
  • Last name, First name. Personal Interview. Day
    month year.
  • Include a short biography, credentials, and
factors making them an expert in the field

10
Example from a Personal Interview
  • Cheney, Lori. Personal Interview. 20 June 2008.
  • Mrs. Lori Cheney is an Intervention Specialist
at New Albany High School where
  • she has worked for the past 16 years. She
focuses on working with Seniors with
  • mild to moderate disabilities, including learning
    disabilities, ADD/ADHD, autism
  • spectrum disorders and other health impairments.
She is highly qualified in the
  • areas of English and History, and has a Masters
    degree from The Ohio State
  • University in the area of Applied Behavior
    Analysis. Her undergraduate degree was
  • earned at Muskingum College in the areas of
    Elementary Education and Special
  • Education. She enjoys working with seniors, and
    focusing her students on transition
  • to post-secondary options, including college, the
    military, the work force and
  • supported education and employment. She feels
paperwork is the worst part of her
  • job, but understands the legal requirements for
    the documentation. The interview
  • will provide insight into one realm of working
with students who have special needs.

11
In Summary
  • Do NOT just summarize the sources
  • Be ANALYTICAL in your reading and writing
  • Consider your source, and the worthiness of that
    source
  • Read, read and read!
  • Know that your final sources used may differ from
    those on your annotated bib!
