Title: Deep Linking in Metalib

1
Deep Linking in Metalib
  • Almost Everything You Need to Know!
  • Este Pope and Melissa Wisner
  • ISP--Production Systems Team
  • A Part of ILTS

2
ISP--Production Systems Team
  • Some Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Orbis
  • Metalib
  • SFX (joint responsibility with Electronic
    Collections)

3
Deep Linking Training Goals
  • Prepare staff to complete the transition of their
links/URLs from DBOW based to Metalib based
  • Explore some of the new linking opportunities
    Metalib provideslinks to Quicksets, Categories
  • Provide time for hands on examples and general
    discussion of deep links

4
Important Metalib/DBOW Dates
  • Metalib has been available for searching from the
Databases and Article Searching page since the
    Summer of 2005
  • During this time staff have maintained records in
DBOW for library resources, and ISP staff have
    maintained corresponding records in Metalib

5
Important Metalib/DBOW Dates
  • On Monday August 7, 2006 DBOW records will cease
to be updatedno access will be provided for this
    purpose
  • DBOW will still exist through the end of Fall
semesterlinks pointing to DBOW will still work
    through the semester

6
Staff access to DBOW admin will cease on August
7, 2006
7
This page will become

9
The new browse A-Z list
Search for a resource by name
Key databases highlighted
10
Combined Search from the Library Front Door.
11
Will search Metalib instead of DBOW Still being
tested in ILTS
12
Updating Links
  • All links/URLs that currently point to DBOW need
to be updated to point to Metalib
  • This work must be completed by/before the end of
    the Fall semester
  • If you do not update your links by the end of the
semester they will produce File not Found
    messages for your users

13
Types of Links to Update
  • Links to a Resource/Database
  • Links to the Databases and Article Searching page
  • Links to database Help pages, Related Resources,
    or Source lists-- Resource Notes

14
Where are the Links that Need Updating?
  • Research/Subject guides
  • Library/departmental websites
  • Links within a DBOW record (Help, Related
Resources, Source Lists, etc.)-- Resource Notes
    links

15
How do I know if my links need to be changed?
  • Do they look like this
  • http//resources.library.yale.edu/online/viewrecor
    ddetpublic.asp?whatcaseedit1704
  • Or like this
  • http//resources.library.yale.edu/online/viewrecor
    ddetpublic.asp?whatcaseedit1396wheretogoSCI

16
This URL links to DBOW, not Metalib and needs to
be updated!
17
Check your Research/Subject Guides pages for any
links pointing to DBOW
18
Links to Database Help, Source Lists, Related
Resources, etc. have been updated to Metalib
syntax by ISP staff, and added to the Resource
Notes field in the IRD records. Maintenance of
these links will be managed by owners of the
resource/record.
19
Where you find the Resource Notes links--must
have a Metalib login to access these.
20
What displays when you click Resource Notes
icon ?
The public display of those Resource Notes links
21
What if I Have More Than Just Links to DBOW?
  • Does your library have an A-Z list of resources
pulled from DBOW and incorporated into your
    library/department web page?
  • WWDCS (a part of ILTS) continues to support this
service with the Metalib platformplease contact
    karen.reardon_at_yale.edu for assistance

22
Specific resources you want can be pulled from
Metalib and presented with the look and feel of
your library or department web page
23
Specific resources you want can be pulled and
presented within Metalib interface too. e.g All
of these resources are useful for Classics
24
How Does all this Work?
  • Ex Libris provides specific syntax to create deep
    links
  • Locally, best practices for keywords are being
    discussed and developed

25
Deep Links The Role of Keywords
  • Why use keywords?
  • Are there any requirements?
  • Are there best practices?
  • How do I add keywords to Metalib records?
  • How do they impact public searching?

26
If you are adding keywords to an IRD record, you
have to indicate that in the Catalogers Note
field.
Enter what type of keywords and your initials.
27
Keywords are placed in the Keywords field of the
IRD.
28
Keywords in Click for More Records
  • These records were created by ISP--PST to
consolidate Link Only resources within a
    CategorySubcategory
  • Consistent keywords are placed in Link Only IRD
    records for each CategorySubcategory
  • A master CategorySubcategory IRD record is
created to point users to Click for More
    Resources

29
Example Keywords in use for Psychology--Click
for more resources IRD record. Note The rules
still apply indicate that keywords are in use
and add initials for person/group that added them.
30
Psychology--Click for more resources appears
within the subcategory to list databases that
cant be searched via Metalib.
31
When users follow the Psychology link these two
resources displaywhy?

33
Here are the keywords for the Psychology Category
in the PsycArticles IRD.
34
Here are the keywords for the Psychology Category
in the PsycBooks IRD.
35
Keywords also facilitate identification of
relevant resources in the public interface
through the Any Word search. e.g. I want to
search for resources about Magic Beans
36
My test record for a resource appears to the
userwhy?
37
I added a keyword of magic_beans to this resource
38
Deep Links Syntax and Examples
39
Example Link to a Resource

  • Will Become MetaLib deep link JSTOR
  • http//databases.library.yale.edu8331/V/?funcfin
    d-db-1-titlemodetitlessearch_typeexactrestric
    tedallscan_startJSTOR

40
Example DA Searching Page Link
  • Was http//www.library.yale.edu/databases/
  • Will become
  • http//databases.library.yale.edu8331/V?funcfind
    -db-1

41
How to Create a Deep Link to Specific
Resource/Database
  • To create a link to any database, simply append
the exact title as it appears in Metalib (Include
any special characters and spaces) to this URL
  • http//databases.library.yale.edu8331/V/?funcfi
    nd-db-1-titlemodetitlessearch_typeexactrestri

42
Example Create a Link for Academic Search Premier

Premier. Find the exact wording and copy the
    title.

    ?funcfind-db-1-titlemodetitlessearch_typeexac
    trestrictedallscan_startAcademic Search
    Premier

43
Caveat for Special Characters in Deep Links
  • Certain special characters in a title will not
    work correctly in deep links
  • apostrophes ()
  • special characters (ie é, ñ, í)
  • slashes (/)
  • parentheses( )
  • plus signs ()
  • See Problem Solving Deep Links for information
on how to link to titles that contain these
