  • Mother is baking a cake ( object, becomes the
    subject in PV)
  • Passive Voice
  • A cake is being baked by Mother ( subject,
    becomes the agent preceded by by)

Some examples
  • Father repaired the car yesterday
  • The car was repaired yesterday by Father
  • Has Mary washed the dishes?
  • Have the dishes been washed by Mary?
  • They will not answer the questions
  • The questions will not be answered (by them)

Verbs with 2 objects
  • Example 1
  • John gave Mary a nice present on her birthday
  • Mary was given a nice present on her birthday by
    John ( the person is preferred to the thing as
    subject of the verb)
  • A nice present was given to Mary on her
    birthday by John ( the emphasis is on the object
    of the active, ie. the thing)

Verbs with 2 objects
  • Example 2
  • Someone will show the students the new books
  • The students will be shown the new books ( no
    agent)
  • The new books will be shown to the students

Uses
  • The doer of the action is obvious or unknown
  • The streets are swept every day
  • The minister was murdered
  • The subject of the active verb would be people
    or the indefinite pronoun one
  • He is suspected of murder ( People suspect him)
  • This kind of chocolate cannot be found everywhere
    (One cannot find this kind of chocolate
    everywhere)
  • We are interested in the action and not in the
    doer
  • The house next door has been bought (by a Mr
    Jones)
