There are steps you can take this year to make
the college process easier!
  • Step 1 Study! Your grades are a reflection of
    your abilities.
  • Step 2 Continue to be involved in your school!
    Join a club / organization or play a sport.
  • Step 3 Continue your volunteer and community
    service efforts.
  • Step 4 Prep for the SAT!

Time Management is the key to accomplishing these
steps. The following is a guideline of activities
for each month or semester.

The Fall Semester
  • AUGUST through January
  • Update your resume in your College Foundation of
    North Carolina (CFNC) account! Include summer
    volunteer and community service or summer
    enrichment experiences
  • Prepare for your classes! Study. Do your
    homework. Ask your teacher for assistance if
    needed!
  • Attend the WCPSS College Fair in September

  • Begin to explore career possibilities. Check with
    your schools Career Development Coordinator.
  • Use CFNC to investigate colleges. Which ones
    offer a degree in your area of interest? Check
    out the admissions criteria. Make a list of your
    favorites!

  • OCTOBER
  • Take the PSAT/ NMSQT
  • This test is offered free of charge to all
    juniors. It will assess your abilities and help
    you prepare for the SAT.

December/January
  • Meet with your Guidance Counselor to review
    your PSAT scores. The Score Report from the
    College Board has valuable information designed
    to help you prepare for the SAT. In addition,
    tools to prepare and practice are available from
    the College Board and CFNC.

The Spring Semester
  • Study! Your grades are important.
  • Stay involved with your school and community.
  • Update your CFNC account.
  • Sign up for the SAT! Registration deadlines are
    posted on your schools website and at
    collegeboard.com. Dont forget to use the free
    test prep options CFNC, College Board and your
    PSAT results!!

Its time to PLAN!!
  • Make an appointment for you, your parents or
    guardians and your counselor to review your
    academic progress, discuss course selections for
    the senior year, and discuss your college
    options.
  • Your counselor has great advice to offer!!

  • Review your list of college favorites.
  • Plan your college visitations! Spring Break
    provides a great window of opportunity! Most
    colleges and universities will sponsor an Open
    House. Check the specific college website for
    details or contact the school directly. Most
    schools will provide a tour upon request. Call
    the admissions office at your favorite colleges.

MarchRegistration for the SENIOR YEAR
  • Choose your senior classes with care. Colleges
    will expect you to maintain the rigor of your
    courses. Continue to challenge yourself.
  • THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO SLACK OFF

Summer before your senior year
  • Continue to visit colleges of interest
  • Update your CFNC account
  • Consider which teachers you would like to ask for
    letters of recommendation. Be considerate. Make
    your request 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Give them a
    copy of your CFNC resume!
  • ATHELETES Register with the NCAA Clearing House
    to insure your eligibility for Division I and II
    schools! Go to NCAAclearinghouse.net for more
    information.
  • RELAX!

    year will make a difference during your senior
    year!
