Our Reason for Existence
  • Develop interesting and useful programs to
    benefit the US-based alumni
  • Develop programs to serve the following
  • Alumni
  • Faculty
  • Campus
  • Students
  • To continue to develop the IIT brand name and
    image and provide a forum for alumni to interact
    with the IITM Board

Last Years Accomplishments
  • Fund Raising - 500K
  • Rs 4 crores donated by Deshpandes for Sharavathi
    girls hostel which was inaugurated on July 2001
  • Donations by Sudhir Krishnan for projects in Air
    Pollution, Water and other projects
  • Donated by Girish Reddy's donation - student
    scholarships
  • IBM grant for hardware- by Ramesh Natarajan
  • Membership - increased from 300 To 1250
  • New Chapter in New York
  • Events Sponsored
  • Class reunion for 1981 - attended by about 50
    people in Las Vegas
  • 2 Networking meetings in San Jose

Four Specific Goals
  • Goal 1 Enhance the IIT M network as follows
  • Double the database of registered alumni from
    1,250 to 2,500
  • Develop at least 2 good services that directly
    help the alumni
  • a well-designed placement program
  • The second program to be determined ( gap health
    insurance)
  • Improve the IITMAANA Website to be
  • Active, Dynamic, Forward-looking
  • http//www.iitmalumni.org (being redesigned)
  • Goal 2 Match Deshpandes annual contribution
    with contributions from other alumni
  • - set up a few categories of alumni donations

Four Specific Goals
  • Goal 3 Publicize the IITM brand name with
    stories about IITMAANA alumni and their
    contributions to the local scene
  • Goal 4 Establish 6 specific projects in IITM to
    be championed by IITMAANA. Each Champion will get
    other alumni to work in these
  • areas, take ownership of these projects,
    do frequent site visits, report
  • and guide the projects.

Methodology - Goal 1
  • Enhance the IITM Network and services
  • Expand the concept of the Network meetings
  • Create a Development office with permanent alumni
    staff
  • Develop PanIIT ideas, meetings etc.
  • Organize web-based symposiums to attract IITM
    alumni living all over North America besides CA
  • Establish more local chapters to create forums
    for personal and professional networking
  • Develop a suitable program to involve and include
    the spouses (in addition to the annual picnic)
  • Web Sub-committee to enhance content,
    infrastructure and user interface

Methodology - Goal 2
  • Major fund raising programs (under discussion )
  • Leadership Giving - Senior IITM alumni who are
    well off, about 20 to 30 alumni contributing
    around 25,000 per year to projects of their
    choice, from the list of required projects
  • Fair Giving Other alumni to contribute 20 to
    50 per month, using an automatic bank
    withdrawal process (with alumnis permission)
  • Encourage batch reunions and and regional get
    togethers to foster spirit of give back

Methodology - Goal 3
  • Publicize IITM brand name
  • Write quarterly human-interest stories about
    IITMAANA alumni and their contributions to the
    local scene and publish this in regional main
    newspapers like NY Times and LA Times
  • Target 3 or 4 Indian ethnic newspapers published
    in US like India Abroad and India Times (in
    Silicon Valley)

  • Establish an Alumni champion working with a IITM
    staff champions to work the specific projects in
    IITM
  • Water Supply to Hostels -
  • Internet Service to Villages - Adopt and support
    Jhunjhunwalas villages to provide Internet
    service.
  • Web-based instruction in IITM
  • Project to recruit more staff at IITM
  • Industry-funded labs in IITM
  • General infrastructure project
  • The Alumni Champion will get other alumni to
    participate, monitor the progress, visit the
    project site and provide feedback and future
    direction

Water Supply to Hostels
1974 batch have collected money to help construct
2 storage tanks to supply clean drinking water to
the hostels. Sunil Wadhwani Mastec- in
Pittsburgh also 1974 batch has provided major
funding.

Internet Service to Villages
Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwalas (Padma Shri) team in
IITM Tenet labs Have installed WLL (Wireless in
the Local Loop) technology in many Villages
Nellikuppam, Melur, Kuppam. Villagers use these
services for birth/death records, agricultural
information, Market prices for harvested crops,
basic medical information

Web-based courses in IITM
About 35 courses in core subjects have been
developed. IITMAANA alumni who are faculty in
various US universities can work with IITM to
develop courses without leaving US

  • 1. IITM and pan-IIT team formed Includes
    industry(Mohan, Bob Rau, Partha, Padma, Monishi,
    Jayant), expanding further, including academic
    group2. Benchmark (Stanford Alumni Association
    etc.), obtain experience summary and insights
    faculty development3. Hook up with IIT Director,
    faculty, students4. Develop seed projects with
    IIT and US/Indian industries/universities
    coordinate with branding effort

A 10-acre land just south of the IITM campus has
been allocated by the Tamil Nadu government. The
research park will enable joint IITM-Industry
research, develop faculty, research opportunities
for students/faculty. Vijay Ullal is the alumni
champion.
