Title: Downsbrook Middle School SMART e-project

1
Downsbrook Middle SchoolSMART e-project
  • Unlocking your childs natural potential to learn
    using the latest handheld technology.

2
Bringing learning to life
  • Every learner has the right to benefit from the
advantages that technology brings to education

3
What we want to do?
  • Provide an e-learning package to each child in
year 5, with contributions from parents, that
includes a school hand held PC (Q1) for
individuals use both at home and at school.
  • Children will continue to use the Q1 through year
6 and 7 or until they leave school.
  • To engage parents over a 3 year period with
    donations of 3.75 a week - 16.25 a month.
  • If this is successful to roll the programme out
to each year 5 class, so that in 3 years all
older children have the individual use of a
    school Q1.
  • To seek funding from the E-learning Foundation
and other charities to subsidise the overall cost
to all parents and bridge the digital divide for
those parents not in a position to pay.
  • Parents of this year group will have the first
option to buy a redundant Q1 at the end of this
    period at a nominal price.

4
What is the digital divide?
  • We know that children from better off families
are 5 times more likely to go to university than
    children from low income families.
  • The introduction of computers is making that gap
even wider because better off families can
provide a computer and Internet access at home.
  • The schools SMART e-project can help to reduce
the gap by encouraging EVERYONE who can to
contribute to a pool of handheld learning devices
that the school can make available to ALL pupils.

5
The SMART e- package
  • The SMART e-package will include
  • A top of the range Q1 tablet PC with all the
functions of a PC or laptop and much more.
  • Learning software package.
  • Warranty for 3 years.
  • 3 year insurance for home as well as at school.
  • Virus protection.
  • Adult/parent training sessions- keeping up with
    the kids!
  • Drop in technical sessions.
  • Back up/ replacement Q1.

6
What is a Q1?
  • A hand held PC that enables pupils to use it
    anytime, anywhere
  • http//www.samsung.com/Products/UltraMobilePC/Ultr
    aMobilePC/NP_Q1_V000SEA.asp

7
Why Should I get involved?
  • Your child could be happier at school, and that
could have many positive knockon effects on
    their behaviour outside school.
  • We encourage families to make full use of the Q1
when it comes home- but we would like your child
    to do their homework first.
  • The school will run courses to help you develop
your own ICT skills if you are being left behind
    by your children!

8
How will my child benefit?
  • All our experience confirms that children find
schoolwork more enjoyable using the computer.
Lessons are more engaging and this means they are
more positive about their education leading to
    higher motivation, attention levels and
    ultimately educational results.
  • Your child will get more from their years at
school and be better prepared for working life.
90 of jobs in the future will require good ICT
    skills.
  • Using a computer for schoolwork and their own
areas of interest leads to developing
independent learning skills they will need as
adults. People today may have several careers
over their working life and have to learn new
    skills with each move.
  • Children can access materials for homework and
revision and their work can be marked
    electronically.
  • The technology has the ability to meet the
different requirements of all ages of students.

9
Why cant the government pay for this?
  • The primary purpose of these additional new
computers is to support the childrens learning
when they are NOT in the classroom and when there
is not a teacher to answer their questions.
  • While government has invested heavily in school
technology it is probably a step too far to
expect them to provide everyone a computer for
    home use.

10
There are other schools doing this as well.
  • We have learnt from trials elsewhere.
  • We are suggesting a Q1 which has all the benefits
of a PDA plus the robustness and software that a
    laptop provides.
