MONITORS RESPONSIBILITIES PROCEDURES

MEMBERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY
  • Each member that uses the woodshop more than
    twice a year should monitor at least once.
  • Members that use the woodshop more frequently
    should monitor more often.
  • All members are expected to be familiar with the
    Monitors Responsibilities and authority.

MONITORS OBJECTIVE
  • Safety is primary responsibility.
  • Stay alert to active work on high risk machines
  • Table Saws
  • Jointer
  • Planer
  • Router
  • Radial arm saw
  • Miter saw
  • Do not read or work on your own project or shop
    project or on equipment repair.

MONITORS DUTIES
  • Wear orange vest.
  • Sign-in everyone check for GREEN Star everyone
    in shop must wear name tag.
  • Conduct shop tours for visitors unless very busy,
    then find someone else to lead tour.
  • No open-toed shoes in shop.
  • Loose fitting work gloves are not allowed when
    operating machinery however tight fitting (golf,
    batting, woodworking) gloves may be worn at the
    users discretion.

MONITORS DUTIES
  • Guards should always be on table saws.
  • Members may remove at own risk, but must put
    guard back before leaving table.

MONITORS DUTIES (cont)
  • Dust collection should be running whenever any
    one is using equipment that is attached to it.
  • Each worker should be reminded to clean up after
    they finish their work.
  • Any problem with machines, tools, supplies, etc.
    should be noted on the first sheet in the
    monitors book.
  • Money handling
  • Any incoming money should be noted on envelope,
    money inserted in envelope, sealed, and deposited
    in Treasurers box.

  • Assist prospective new members with the sign up
    process
  • Prior to putting their name on the next Safety
    Orientation Class list, they must
  • Fill out an envelope with all information
    complete
  • Insert 55 in the envelope (check preferred) to
    cover the class fee (15) plus annual dues
    (40).
  • Fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. See the sign up sheet for
    full details.
  • The first 10 people to sign up and pay will take
    the class. Others should put their names on the
    wait list which will roll to the next month.

RED PANIC BUTTON
  • Located on west wall at Monitors desk.
  • Trips the main breaker to all primary machines.
  • Lights and dust collection system not affected.

  • To restart, main circuit breaker in Tool room
    must be reset.
  • All should stand clear of machines for reset.

SAFETY AIDS
  • First aid kit is located on wall next to Womens
    bathroom. Review contents.

  • Know where fire extinguishers are in the shop and
    how to use them!

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE
  • Call 911 for serious injury.
  • Provide operator with
  • Your name
  • Woodshop phone number 512-868-9663
  • Woodshop address 1303 Sun City Blvd
  • Description of injury and severity
  • Name of injured person
  • Stay on line until operator tells you to hang up
  • Assist the injured person and solicit help from
    other Woodworkers to aid and clean up.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE
  • Call Community Association office.
  • 864-1200
  • Complete CA accident form blanks are stored in
    file cabinet under desk.
  • Notify a Club Officer (phone list on wall).
  • Enter details in Safety Record log located in
    Monitors desk.

DOS
  • Do stop material coming into the shop that could
    be dangerous to people or equipment -
  • Old wood that might have hidden metal (nails,
    screws), embedded stones, or concrete coating.
  • Do make sure hardened glue is scraped from
    jointed surfaces before running through sanders.

DONTS
  • Dont allow following materials in the Woodshop
    for any type of work cutting, drilling,
    sanding, sharpening, etc.
  • Treated lumber
  • Used lumber
  • PVC
  • Glass or glass blocks
  • Cement boards (Hardiplank type material)
  • Metal of any kind

MORE DONTS
  • Dont allow work on fresh glue-ups.
  • Dont allow pine or any other wood that is damp
    or wet in power sanders.
  • Dont allow painted lumber through the power
    sanders.

OPENING
  • An officer will unlock shop by 830 AM.
  • Be on time shop opens at 830 AM.
  • Turn on lights.
  • Sign-in as Monitor.
  • Wear orange Monitor vest.

OPENING ( during the day)
  • Make sure guards are on table saws.

  • Make sure guard is properly positioned on the
    jointer.

  • To turn on the compressor, make sure the power
    switch on the small breaker box closest to the
    compressor shed is in the ON position.

Do not change These switches

  • Turn on dust collection system when anyone starts
    using equipment attached to the collector.

  • Make coffee.
  • TUESDAY FRIDAY MORNING all four dust barrels
    are to be EMPTIED into the dumpster in back of
    shop. The Monitor should seek assistance.

MID DAY
  • The morning monitor should shut down the dust
    collector around noon let it stay off for a few
    minutes until the shaking has stopped.
    Restart as soon as anyone begins using equipment
    attached to the collector system.

CLOSING
  • Work stops and clean up starts at 4 PM no
    earlier.
  • Turn off coffee maker. Dump coffee in sink and
    rinse pot.
  • Make sure all equipment is turned off.
  • Return all hand tools (except hand sanders) to
    tool room or tool rack.
  • Brush or vacuum all machines, benches, counters,
    and equipment. Keep dust collection system
    running during clean up.
  • Sweep floor.

CLOSING (cont)
  • Empty all floor vacuums if needed.
  • Dump trash barrels in dumpster behind shop.
  • Turn off dust collection system when clean up
    completed.

  • To turn OFF the compressor, make sure the power
    switch on the small breaker box closest to the
    compressor shed is in the OFF position.

  • Remove orange monitors vest and place in drawer.
  • Make sure key for cabinet containing screws, etc.
    is in the Monitors desk drawer.
  • Make sure back door is closed and locked.
  • Turn off all lights except ones over Monitors
    desk and back security light.

  • Release the push bar on front doors with hex key
    (hanging on wall to left of door). The doors
    will automatically lock when closed.
  • Move Open/Closed sign to Closed
