Historical Veterinary Science
  • Veterinary profession originated in the Middle
    East in the 14th century as equine doctors
  • Profession moved on to a rural production
    animal based focus

21st Century Veterinary Profession
  • 2008 Australasia now has 7 schools with about
    100-120 in each year at Melbourne, Sydney and
    Queensland, about 80 each at Murdoch and Massey,
    with James Cook and Charles Sturt at 45 each
  • 2007 - Graduating about 460-480 new vets per year
  • Percentage of women at the traditional schools is
    now about 85-90 of each year (UK, Denmark,
    Australasia)
  • 2010 Graduating about 550 per year 600 by
    2013
  • Where do these graduates currently start in
    practice and where will they be mid-career?
  • How do we future proof the profession against
    over supply?

Veterinary Profession
  • Total vets in work 2009 about 8400
  • UQ 60 start in mixed or large animal practice
    and 40 go to small animal practice
  • Longevity of new grads in rural practice is
    several years, only 12-15 remain at 15 years
  • 7 unemployment amongst vets 2006-7 relative to
    overall unemployment of 5
  • Equal numbers of men and women various types of
    practice
  • Median male earnings 100,000 vs. women 70,000
  • General dissatisfaction with remuneration for
    hours worked amongst younger vets irrespective of
    gender

Improved Service to the Rural Sector
  • Problems of retention isolation, excessive on
    call, lack of professional support, physically
    demanding nature of the work leads to injury,
    poor remuneration all lead to burn out
  • Train more graduates from rural areas? Slight

  • Support in form of regional centres to decrease
    on call demands provide professional support
    increased sophistication of services available so
    greater professional satisfaction greater
    rural practitioner retention
  • Remote consultation enhanced with novel IT options

How to engage rural practitioners more and
increase connectivity for the profession?
  • Enhancement of connectivity between RW campus to
    facilitate in increased rural practice engagement
    to allow development of an IT hub for Roseworthy.
    Access to SABRENET for high speed transmission.
  • Envisage RW as hub for partner practices to be
    able to stream video images and sound to and from
    RW to hard wired practices (endoscopy,
    arthroscopy images)
  • Many TAFE sites have this capability already
  • Ability to use broadband to enable real time
    rounds between distant sites and Roseworthy with
    images and sound for case based discussions,
    disease surveillance, conferencing with vets and
    or students
  • Application is for 2.5 million to enhance rural
    practice interactions unsuccessful first time
    but will keep trying

Safety of Food Supply Public Health
  • Production animal disease control E coli
    strains contaminating meat sources renal
    failure deaths from hamburger in the US traced to
    faecal contamination from feed lot cattle
  • Parasite control in food sources
  • Contamination of water sources for consumption or
    crop irrigation with drugs or products from
    animal sources
  • Drug residues in food products, melamine on milk
    products renal failure in infants
  • Diagnostic Laboratory services decline
  • Quarantine Services problems with EI
  • Vets should take leadership roles in policy
    development, education and governance in these
    areas
  • Need for enhanced veterinary pathology training
    to counter the decline in numbers

Experts in Bio-terrorism Prevention
  • Threats from infectious agents such as Anthrax,
    small pox, plague by malicious contamination or
    dissemination
  • Veterinary knowledge of epidemiology of
    infectious disease and pandemic spread should
    make vets the leaders in bio-terrorism
    prevention, investigation and management
  • Need greater pathology and diagnostic focus, one
    medicine

Knowledge of Emerging Diseases
  • In last 25 years, 38 new pathogens have been
    identified 75 of which have animal origin.
    BSE-related, avian influenza, HIV
  • 1400 pathogens cause human disease 800 of
    these have crossed species barriers from animals
  • Wild sources Hanta virus - rats, Hendra virus
    bats to horses, Lyssavirus - bats, West Nile
    virus - birds
  • Transmissible tumours facial tumours in
    Tassie devils and parallels with transmissible
    venereal tumours in dogs
  • Vets as the experts in the management of public
    health through their knowledge of disease
    transmission and zoonoses

  • 6 years 3 year BSc Pre-Vet, then 3 years
    clinical post graduate programme
  • Animal husbandry experience in holidays in
    Pre-Vet years and practice experience in the
    postgraduate programme
