1Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.andSt. Jude
Childrens Research Hospital
- Bridging Communities Through Partnership
2St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital
- St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, founded
by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, is the
first institution established for the sole
purpose of conducting basic and clinical research
into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly
cancer. - The first desegregated hospital in Memphis and
the region. It functioned as a totally
integrated facility including treatment areas,
dining rooms and bathroom facilities. - St. Jude, which is non-sectarian, treats children
without regard to race, religion, creed or
ability to pay. St. Jude is the ONLY pediatric
cancer research center where families never pay
for treatments that are not covered by insurance.
Families without insurance are NEVER asked to
pay. - The hospitals daily operating costs are
approximately more than 1.2 million, which are
primarily covered by public contributions.
3St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital
- The only brain tumor program in the world devoted
entirely to children. - The first to receive government approval for a
unique bone marrow transplant procedure that
makes it possible for parents who are not exact
matches to be donors for their children. - Since its inception, St. Jude has developed
protocols that have brought survival rates for
childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to
more than 70 percent overall.
42007 Achievements
- Kappa raised 100,000 for St. Jude in 2006-2007.
- This represents the largest donation that Kappa
has given to a charity. - Because of the huge success this year, the Kappa
Alpha Psi Grand Board has committed that Kappa
will raise 500,000 in five years. This donation
will go towards the name of the main lobby of the
Translational Trials Unit.
5Overview of the Translational Trials Unit (TTU)
- Some of St. Judes most unparalleled advances are
housed in the TTU including translational
medicine, the HIV/AIDS Program and the Sickle
Cell Clinic. - St. Jude has done research in Sickle Cell disease
since its inception. The first research grant was
given to Dr. Lemuel Diggs for the continuation of
his work on sickle cell anemia. - St. Jude is the first known hospital in the world
to cure sickle cell disease through bone marrow
transplantation. Today, bone marrow
transplantation still offers the only cure for
sickle cell disease. - St. Jude now has one of the largest pediatric
Sickle Cell research and treatment programs in
the world. - St. Jude is the leader in pediatric AIDS
research. St. Jude scientists are investigating
drugs to further prevent mother-to-infant
transmission of the HIV/AIDS virus. Scientists
are also studying new drugs to inhibit the virus. - A parainfluenza virus vaccine, AIDS vaccine, and
a cholera vaccine are currently under
investigation in the TTU.
6So how can Kappa Alpha Psi members achieve this
goal?
7Sunday of Hope
- Sunday of Hope is a program that will be
implemented in churches across the country. - On one Sunday in January, Kappa members will get
up in front of their congregation to ask for a
love offering for St. Jude. - We selected January because Founders Day is in
that month.
8Sunday of Hope Heres How It Works
- September-November
- Kappa members will recruit churches in your local
community to commit to host a Sunday of Hope
event one Sunday in the month of January. St.
Jude will provide all collateral materials to
help recruit churches and execute the program. - Each alumni chapter is asked to sign on one
church for their chapter. The goal for each
church signed on is to raise at least 1,000. - Kappa members will go online to register their
churches. The deadline to register will be
November 20.
9Sunday of Hope Heres How It Works (cont.)
- St. Jude will ship all collateral materials to
the churches December 1. - On the selected Sunday, a Kappa member will
present to their congregation. You will show a
St. Jude patient story, educate the congregation
about St. Jude and ask for a love offering in
honor of St. Jude patients and their families. - The Kappa members and church officials will
collect the revenue, count it and send it to St.
Jude. Monies collected from each church will be
tracked individually. Each donor will receive an
acknowledgement from St. Jude - St. Jude will host a National check presentation
at St. Jude for Kappa members and top church
officials. - St. Jude will send out a national post event
press release to publicize Kappas commitment to
community.
