Botswana Mopane Safari        May 18, 2002
A mobile camping safari travels overland from one
habitat to another, game viewing in an open
vehicle with all the camping gear in tow. On this
style of safari, participants pitch their own
tents (spacious 8x8 stand up), cook the meals
over a wood fire grill and help maintain order in
camp. The seven members of our group were five
American women and a Swiss couple on their
honeymoon with ages ranging from 28 to 67.

Bordered in the north by the 4200 sq. mile Chobe
National Park and in the south east by the Hwange
National Park, this area of Mopane forest and
savanna woodland form part of the migratory route
for large numbers of Elephant which have moved
between these two National Parks, across the
international boundaries for centuries... At
certain times of the year large numbers of
Elephant Bulls are to be found, giving the
discerning hunter the opportunity to select and
the real possibility of taking an exceptional
trophy.
Tracking Elephant is a common practice and offers
a very challenging hunt to those who are able to
walk long distances. The area also supports good
populations of Lion, Leopard, Buffalo as well as
a variety of plains game animals notably Gemsbok
and Livingstone Eland.

We have always been proud to say, "We are hunters
serving hunters," and believe that responsible
and ethical hunting is our best conservation
tool.

  • In 1989, USAID began to work with the government
of Botswana and local residents in Chobe. Today,
the enclave is Botswana's flagship demonstration
    of community-based natural resources management
and is the longest-running project of its kind in
    the country.
  • In 1992, residents of the five villages of the
Chobe Enclave came together to form the Chobe
Enclave Conservation Trust, with all permanent
village residents as members. The Chobe Trust
received the right to manage the wildlife quota
    from the area.
  • The trust also negotiated a joint venture with a
private safari operator, which helped create 55
jobs for community members. The Chobe Trust has
earned around 226,000 for members of its five
villages and has produced about 100,000 in
    employment and goods.
  • Management at the local level has also reduced
trophy-hunting licenses by 75 percent, reflecting
the growing importance of wildlife-based tourism
to the local economy and helping conserve the
    area's important biological diversity.

14
  • The principles that were developed in Chobe now
form the core of Botswana's natural resources
management program. To qualify for the right to
manage an area's wildlife, a community must have
  • a representative, accountable management group
  • plans for managing resources
  • and abide by the national guidelines on
    community-based management of natural resources.
  • As a result of the success of community
management in Chobe, 34 areas in Botswana --
one-fifth of the land area outside national parks
-- now have been set aside for management by
trusts. Six trusts have been established for
managing wildlife, and three for managing other
    forest products.

The community of Xai Xai has organized itself
into CgaeCgae Tlhabololo Trust (CTT) and been
allotted the community controlled hunting area
called NG/4 in Western Botswana. The income and
food from the people of Xai Xai are derived from
cattle, employment (mainly government), handout
(destitute food, food for children and lactating
mothers, CBPP Eradication Programme rations),
crafts, hunting, gathering and occasional tourism
activities.
18
Xaixai has a health post, a primary school (70
children, seven teachers), a court clerk, a
headman and two local police. A Community Based
Natural Resource Management Project has started
end 1994 to assist the community and has
facilitated in the establishment of a local
Crafts organisation, a street vendor, a Quota
Management Committee and the Cgaecgae Tlhabololo
Trust.
A community tourism venture is very important for
the people of Xai Xai as it brings jobs that are
compatible with traditional life in Xai Xai and
rely on skills the people of Xai Xai already
possess.

ALTHOUGH MY grandma died I can still remember her
special ingredient in how to cook thepe. Thepe is
special traditional food cooked by batswana
people. Mopane (phane) worm is a type of worm
eaten by the tribe and it lives in the mopane
tree.
It forms the basis of a multi-million rand trade
in edible insects, providing a livelihood for
many harvesters, traders and their families.
