What is an Insect?
  • A small animal with a hard shelled body.
  • All insects hatch from eggs.
  • The body of an insect has 3 parts head, thorax,
    and abdomen.
  • There are more than a million species of insects
on the earth. Some of the most common ones are
    ants, butterflies, moths, bees, beetles,
    grasshoppers, fleas, crickets, flies, and
    mosquitoes.

How do Insects Communicate?
  • Crickets communicate at night. Grasshoppers
communicate during the day. Both make sounds by
rubbing their rear legs against the edges of
their wings or by rubbing one leg or one wing
against the other. These sounds are called
    chirps.
  • Bees do special dances that communicate messages
    to other bees.
  • Ants have no voice, they do not communicate with
sound. They leave messages through secretions
which they pass throughout the colony by touching
    each other.

6
How do Insects Live?
  • Ants are known as social insects. They live
    together in organized communities called
colonies. Most members of an ant colony are
workers. Workers are female but do not lay eggs
    as does the queen.
  • Bees live together in colonies called nests or
    hives.
