  • Intended to link countries economically so that a
    European war would never happen again.
  • Known originally as the European Economic
    Community or as the Common Market

There are four main parts (Institutions) in the EU
  • The Council of Ministers
  • The Commission
  • The European Parliament
  • The European Court of Justice

The Commission
  • The Civil service of the EU
  • Makes suggestions about policy
  • Carries out the decisions of the Council of
    Ministers

The Council of Ministers
  • Makes most of the major decisions
  • Different Ministers attend for different issues
  • Considers proposed changes to European law
    submitted by the European Parliament

The European Parliament
  • Directly elected in each country
  • Serves 5 years
  • Makes comments on proposed laws
  • Recommends changes to the Council of Ministers

The Council of Ministers discusses them
The Commission makes proposals
The Parliament suggests changes
The Council makes the final decision
The Court of Justice considers any legal problems
The Commission puts the decision into practice
