Biltmore Estate and Gardens
8
Biltmore Estate and Gardens
  • Biltmore House is a French Renaissance-inspired
chateau near Asheville, North Carolina, built by
George Washington Vanderbilt between 1888 and
1895. It is the largest privately owned home in
the United States at 175,000 square feet (250
rooms with 63 bedrooms and 43 bathrooms) and
took between 300 500 employees to run the
    estate after its completion.
  • The home had electric lights, telephones, indoor
plumbing, indoor pool bowling alley, an
elevator and central heat and air in a time when
everyone else was going potty in the outhouse.
  • No one knows exactly how much the Biltmore
Estate cost to build, but it is believed to be
around ten million dollars (which is 210,000,000
    dollars in 2008).

The Founding Fathers Fortunes
10
The Founding Fathers Fortunes
  • "Our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."
  • The last paragraph of the Declaration contains a
phrase that speaks volumes about those men who
met in Philadelphia the summer of 1776 to set
into motion the firestorm that would eventually
    mean liberty for us all.
  • Remember, these were not wild-eyed
    revolutionaries. They were not firebrand
radicals. These were men who were secure in their
lives and property. They were wealthy
Aristocrats. They risked everything and had only
one thing to gain - their freedom.

11
The Founding Fathers Fortunes
  • With only a few exceptions, such as Samuel Adams
of Massachusetts, these were men of substantial
property. All but two had families, and were men
of education and standing in their communities.
They had economic security as few men had in the
    18th century.
  • The last line says, "we mutually pledge to each
other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred
Honor." Each knew the full meaning of the
magnificent last words of that paragraph. The
names were kept secret for six months since that
signature on the Declaration pledged his life,
his fortune and his sacred honor. Fifty-six men
placed their names beneath that pledge and they
knew when they signed they were risking
    everything.

What Does The Bible Say?
  • Proverbs 1022 (NIV)
  • The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he
    adds no trouble to it.
  • Proverbs 215 (NLT)
  • Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity,
but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.
  • 1 Timothy 617 (NIV)
  •   Command those who are rich in this present
world not to be arrogant, or to put their hope in
wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their
hope in God, who richly provides us with
    everything for our enjoyment.

Sodom, I have raised my hand in an oath to the

16
to the end
  • Revelation 183For all the nations have drunk

  • Revelation 1814They will say, The fruit you
longed for is gone from you. All your riches and

18
Self Reflection -
  • Now what is your concept of
  • rich or being rich?
  • The word mansions does appear in John 142 in

  • Things to think about and always remember
  • Dont think for a minute that we arent rich.
  • Our possessions are luxuries that most of the
people in the world dont have.
  • Remember that Christ said to his disciples, "I
tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to

best question is, What can I give?
