Title: Knowing the truth means knowing Jesus, which begets true freedom

1
The Truth Shall Set You Free
  • Knowing the truth means knowing Jesus, which
    begets true freedom

2
Introduction
  • In a previous lesson it was learned as the
Scriptures reveal that knowing more of Gods
will not only helps us to understand truth from
error, it also added a burden that came with that
    knowledge. Cp. Rom. 77-8
  • We know that the Law is good in that it brings
    about the knowledge of sin.
  • What it also did, however, was brought about a
    coveting of every kind.
  • So, how can the truth of Gods word (e.g. His
laws) which bring about coveting of every
kind be reconciled with Jesus words that it is
truth that sets man free? Jn. 831-32?

3
Introduction
  • It is this type of philosophical rhetoric that
Jesus is engaged in when in the temple.
  • It is a place where truth was to be taught and
    practiced.
  • It is this place where Jesus made clear what is
essential for a person to be set free.

4
Introduction
  • In this lesson we shall see
  • How truth is personified through Christ.
  • Thus, it is not only what sets us free, but who
    sets us free.

5
Truth Personified Through Christ
  • Understanding the concept of the word truth.
  • The literal Greek word (??????) for truth means
    unconcealed, manifest.
  • The word literally comes from ? negative and
????? (from letho lanthano) forget, escape
    notice.
  • The meaning thusly understood as fact or reality.

6
Truth Personified Through Christ
  • Truth Illustrated.
  • As light.
  • In contrast to darkness, light is unconcealed and
    is/makes manifest.
  • Metaphorically, light is represented as truth.
    Eph. 58-10
  • As law. Psa. 119142
  • Law represents all that directs and instructs.
    Cp. Rom. 77
  • Simultaneously, law reveals (makes manifest) what
    is true.

7
Truth Personified Through Christ
  • Truth Personified in Christ.
  • God is referred to as Truth. Tit. 11-3
  • Jesus is the manifestation (remember definition
of truth) or express image of God.
  • Therefore, Jesus can rightfully claim to be The
    Truth. Jn. 831-32

8
Christ The Word of Truth Sets Us Free
  • There is in a practical sense a liberation
that comes from man knowing the truth.
  • This was part of the message Jesus when speaking
to His believers (and to us, as well). Jn 831ff
  • Knowing the teachings of Gods laws is likened
unto a lighted path that leads man by way of
    truth to salvation. Psa. 119105
  • Man is given the freedom to accept or reject what
is revealed to him cp. Rom. 116-17
  • The existence of God, or the Son of God.
  • The message of Gods salvation.

9
Christ The Word of Truth Sets Us Free
  • Ultimately, however, it is through a
manifestation of Gods own goodness through
Christ, that man is able to be free.
  • The choice of man apart from the act of God
does not set us free from the fact that we are
guilty of sin. Rom 323 623
  • Therefore, it is through Jesus Christ the
begotten of God and the Savior of this world
who sets man free from the bondage of sin.
  • Those who reject this truth will die in their
sins for they will reject Jesus Himself and God
    who sent Him. Jn. 824

10
Conclusion
  • We have a difficult burden in knowing truth, e.g.
the knowledge of sin and our guilt stemming from
    it. Rom. 724
  • Greater than our sins and the knowledge of our
sins, however, is Truth Himself, who delivers us
from sin through His precious blood. Rom. 725-84
