Our Goals Today
  • Define and Discuss Internet Fundamentals

Define and Discuss Social Networking Sites
Demonstrate How You Can Access Social Networking
Sites to Gather Information Associated with
Underage Drinking and Other Criminal Activity
4
Internet 101
  • The Internet is
  • A global system of interconnected computer
    networks.
  • Millions of private and public, academic,
business, and government networks of local to
    global scope.
  • Linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables,
    and wireless connections.

5
Internet 101
  • The Internet
  • Carries a vast array of information
    resources and services.
  • Infrastructure to support electronic mail.
  • Originated back in the 1960s.

6
Internet 101
  • In the 1990s worldwide participation in the
development of new networking technologies led to
    the commercialization of an international
    network.
  • Popularization of countless applications
ensued becoming present in virtually every aspect
    of modern human life.
  • In 2009, it estimated that one quarter of
Earth's population uses the services of the
    Internet.

7
The Internet and Social Networking
  • New forms of social interaction, activities
and organizing, are inherent to the internets
basic features. The net facilitates widespread
    usability and access for users.

8
Social Networking
  • Social networking websites have defined
maximized these new forms of socialization/interac
    tion.
  • Users of these sites are able to add a wide
variety of items to their personal pages, to
indicate common interests, and to connect with
    others.

9
Social Networking
  • Write down all the different forms of media
and or online social networking sites you use on
    a daily basis.
  • How many times a day do you use that different
    type of media?
  • What are the benefits of each site?
  • Does that site have a picture uploading
    feature?

10
Social Networking
  • Turn to the person next to you and see if
there is any media/social networking site your
neighbor is using and you are not.

Now Lets Compile Them
11
Social Networking
  • Why are Social Networking Sites so appealing?

Anonymity
People can be whoever they want to be. Hide Age,
Sex, Location, Picture Job Occupation, Income,
Qualifications Hidden Interests, Hobbies, Life
Events Easier To Make Statements about Oneself
when Not Meeting Face-To-Face. Ever Talk Behind
Someones Back??? Make False Statements On the
Telephone??? The prevalence of cyber bullying.
12
Social Networking

Points to think about
  • Revealing too much personal information creates
safety concerns, could lead to identity theft
(even just birthdates, address, name) or
    stalking.
  • Role model and reputation People are looking at
each others profiles all the time.
  • One could be subject to disciplinary or criminal
action The FBI investigated a student for
joining an I hate Bush group. The student asked
others to donate a dollar for the assassination
    fund.
  • Law Enforcement use social network sites in our
investigations. It is perfectly legal for us to
do so as this is all public information.

73
Investigative Purposes
Points to think about
  • Detect evidence of past and present crimes, or
    crimes in progress.
  • Identify at risk youth.
  • Monitor social behavior.
  • Conduct counter intelligence.
  • Monitor gang and hate group recruiting.
  • Monitor your own childrens activity.
  • Proactive policing of pedophiles.

74
Some of the Dangers
Points to think about
  • On line predators - 1 in 5 kids are approached by
a predator (National Center for Missing and
    Exploited Children)
  • False sites, pornography, phishing for personal
    info for identity theft.
  • Gang and hate group recruitment.
  • Little supervision.
  • Cyber Bullying.

75
Points to think about
  • Take the time to develop a working knowledge of
    these sites
  • Searches
  • Groups
  • Friend requests
  • Internal email and external comments

76
Points to think about
  • I encourage you to think of a profile as a
    virtual resume.

Social networking users can add a wide variety of
items to their personal pages. They can find
others with common interests. It is also possible
to find a large circle of existing acquaintances,
especially if a site allows users to utilize
their real names.
77
In Closing
  • I want to leave you with one thought. I would
challenge everyone here to Police All Resources
    Effecting our Nations Teens.

Being a good PARENT will let us work together to
impact the negative behaviors that are rapidly
emerging in some of our young adults.
  • I want to thank you for you time and attention
today. I would also welcome questions at this
    time.
