6
Eating Disorder Fiction
  • An eating disorder is about eating too little or
    too much.
  • If someone wanted to lose weight, they just need
to go on a diet or a good cleanse.
  • Eating disorders are only a young womans issue.
  • If someone is wrestling with an eating disorder,
they just need to repent their sin and pray more.

7
Eating Disorder Fiction
  • People lose weight using laxatives and diuretics.
  • Once a disordered eater has achieved a normal
    weight, she is recovered.
  • Once eating disordered, always eating disordered.
  • Parents are to blame for their childs eating
    disorder
  • Food is fattening.

8
Eating Disorder Facts
  • Of the 10 million Americans afflicted with eating
disorders, 87 percent are children and
adolescents under the age of twenty.
  • The average age of eating disorders onset has
dropped from ages 13-17 to ages 9-12.
  • 81 of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat 25
of first graders admit to having been on a diet.
  • Children who diet have a greater tendency to
    become overweight adults.

9
Eating Disorder Facts
  • There are genetic markers that can push a person
in the direction of an eating disorder.
  • Eating disorders run in families.
  • Genetic predisposition does not guarantee that a
person will automatically suffer from an eating
    disorder. The environment -- a person's life
experience -- still has to pull the trigger.

Treatment
  • The fallen or broken condition of the world
creates vulnerabilities in every aspect of our
    humanity
  • Body
  • Soul
  • Spirit
  • Social Context
  • Personal Sin
  • Eating disorders result from these
    vulnerabilities in combination.

Treatment
  • To perceive eating disorders as chiefly due to
personal sin or willful disobedience is to
    completely misunderstand eating disorders.
  • An inordinate emphasis on personal sin is harmful
to the human person and is inconsistent with
    Scripture.
  • Many eating disorder patients live isolated lives
filled with shame and guilt, and believe that
they have failed God to the point where He cannot
    love them anymore.

  • There is no such thing as a good food or bad food
  • Balance over time - is key
  • Food is fuel, medicine not the enemy
  • No weighing or talking about numbers, calories or
    fat grams
