  • Institutional mission taking research into
    programmatic action, proven record and future
    promise.
  • Institutional policies that promote academic
    excellence and foster new faculty development.
  • Strategic planning and development plan with
    clear priorities for action and stated needs.

Selection of Candidates
EMF-INF 2002-07 UNU/IUNS
  • Sponsoring institution support for applicants
    training as part of development plan
  • Commitment by applicant to research in developing
    country setting.
  • Commitment to provide a position and research
    support to make use of the training
  • Applicant must agree to return to developing
    country institution for at least 5 years.

IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL INSTITUTIONS
  • Staff identification of potential institutions
  • Background information and a staff development
    plan from the institution selected.
  • A staff site-visit to report on and assess
    potential of the institution.
  • On-site review of the institutional program and
    of a staff development plan.
  • On-site interviews with potential fellows.
  • Invitation to potential fellow to submit a
    fellowship form.
  • Review of the site visit, staff development, and
    fellowship proposals by the steering committee.
  • If approved, negotiations regarding place of
    training, acceptance by the training institution,
    and financial arrangements will follow.

  • Post Doctoral training of young PhD scientists or
    MDs with demonstrated research potential
  • PhD training for young scientists or MDs with
    exceptional capacity and commitment
  • Training of mid career scientists with
    demonstrated productivity to reorient or
    strengthen research effort.

Types of Support

  • Candidates for PhD training in industrialized
    countries will be expected to return to their own
    of another developing country for their thesis
    research.
  • The program has the flexibility to adapt to
    institutional and individual need.
