  • Music therapy is a science that has been applied
since many centuries ago, but it has been
organized as a profession during the past
century. This science studies the therapeutic
effects of music in human beings. Professionals
who practice this science are called "music
therapists" and they must be trained not only in
music theory and performance, but also in
    psychology, anatomy, research techniques, and
other subjects. Today, we can find music therapy
research in many areas such as the effects of
music in children with autism, adults with
psychiatric illnesses, elderly with Alzheimer and
Parkinson disease, people with brain injuries,
among others. Numerous studies demonstrate the
functionality of music therapy in patients with
neurological disorders. These studies show that
music helps patients to gain control over their
walking patterns after a brain injury, stimulates
long and short term memory in patients with
Alzheimer disease, and increase self esteem and
social interaction in elders (Rev Méd Chile 2001
    129 219-23).

  • Relax- Millions of people use music to unwind a
    stressful day.
  • Energize- All who do any activity that involves
music know the power of it. For example dancers
may feel the music and use that as a tool to have
    an incredible performance.

  • Generally, music which is slow and quiet tends to
encourage relaxation and reduce anxiety while
stimulating music tends to increase our arousal
levels. The characteristics of music that induce
different moods seem to relate to three main
    dimensions, pleasure-displeasure,
    arousal-non-arousal and dominance-submissiveness,
although it has proved very difficult to specify
with any degree of accuracy which musical
structures evoke particular moods. There is some
evidence that minor and major modes tend to be
associated with happiness and sadness, firm
rhythm tends to evoke feelings of dignified and
vigorous character, and flowing rhythm, happy
feelings. Specific reactions to music, e.g.
shivers down the spine, laughter, tears and lump
in the throat may be related to particular
    musical structures.

  • Studies have been done on children who have had
some sort of musical development verses children
who havent. The studies have shown that the
adolescents with the development do better in
school and jobs later on. They also can gain
public speaking skills, if they perform.

  • This type of research faces some unique
challenges, particularly since the motor, verbal,
and musical skills of very young children are not
fully developed. In a study of motor skill
development utilizing the Motoric Music Skills
Test developed for this purpose, Gilbert tested
808 children aged three through six and found
that mean performance scores increased at each
age level. (Gilbert 1980) In at least one study
on melodic perception (Ramsey, 1983, p. 144) it
was noted that the singing proficiency of the
children affected their ability to demonstrate
    melodic perception through vocal response.
Several other studies (Scott, 1979 Webster
    Schlentrick, 1982 Fyk, 1995/96) utilized
non-verbal or a combination of verbal and
non-verbal methods to circumvent this difficulty.
However, in a longitudinal study of rhythm
development (Rainbow, 1981, p. 72), it was found
that 3-year-old children completed rhythm tasks
more successfully when employing a vocal
    response. The most illuminating studies,
therefore, were those that gave the children a
variety of ways to express their understanding of
    musical concepts.
  • A consideration in examining these research
studies is the danger of generalizing findings to
all children or all forms of instruction when the
findings may be due, in large part, to the
effectiveness (or lack of it) of the particular
teaching method used in the investigation. For
example, Groves (1969) studied rhythmic training
and its relationship to the synchronization of
motor-rhythmic responses. One group of children
received no instruction the other group was
given 30 minute lessons for 24 weeks providing a
nondirective technique of teaching with emphasis
on rhythms incorporated in a tonal setting. Four
weeks at a time were devoted to one basic rhythm
pattern basic patterns were combined as more
patterns were learned with instruction in the
final four-week period combining all patterns. No
significance was found in test results between
those with rhythmic instruction and those without
instruction. This does not indicate that rhythm
instruction is never effective at this age, but
that this form of rhythm instruction is not
effective. This in itself is valuable information
for the teacher in search of effective methods,
but the example illustrates the importance of
    keeping research findings in perspective.

DRUG OVERDOSE
  • Many rock and rollers are known for drugs. A lot
of them have died from it. A lot of times people
are driven to take drugs in order to get pumped
for a concert a performance. Then the drugs dont
wear off, so they have to take a depressant in
order to go to sleep, but then they cant wake up
    because of the depressant.
  • Main drugs known to performers and their side
    effects
  • Marijuana - Euphoria Relaxed inhibitions
    Increased appetite Disorientation, Fatigue
    Paranoia Possible psychosis, Occasional reports
    of insomnia Hyperactivity Decreased appetite
  • Crack cocaine - Increased alertness Excitation
Euphoria Increased pulse rate blood pressure
Insomnia Loss of appetite, Agitation Increased
    body temperature Hallucinations Convulsions
Possible death, Apathy Long periods of sleep
    Irritability Depression Disorientation
  • Heroine - Euphoria Drowsiness Respiratory
depression Constricted pupils Nausea, Slow and
    shallow breathing Clammy skin Convulsions
Coma Possible death, Watery eyes Runny nose
Yawning Loss of appetite Irritability Tremors

PROFANITY
(back to table of contents)
  • Profanity is a big problem when it comes to
listening to music. A lot of songs have messages
of murder, rape, and a lot of other vulgar ideas
coming from them. Although a lot of people dont
listen to the vulgar messages in songs, at least
double that amount do pay attention to it. Some
people take the lyrics in songs to extremes. For
instance, there was a kid that was listening to a
song called Highway to Hell by AC-DC. He went
to the football field and hung himself on the
field goal post after recently telling some of
his friends that he planned to meet Satan. The
boys parents tried to blame AC-DC for their
childs death. That is one of many examples of
people taking lyrics to the extreme. Was the
cause of the boys suicide due to his listening
to AC-DC? That is for you to decide.

  • Dear Distress Department,
  • I love to dance and I love dancing to rap
music. But even though I love the beat and the
energy of the music, sometimes I feel like the
profanity and the messages of rap (misogyny,
materialism, etc.) are not in line with spiritual
values. For example, I believe in the equality of
men and women and I know that life is not about
money, but I really do love hip-hop culture, and
rap is favorite type of music to dance to. Do you
have any advice on how to reconcile my love of
good dance music with my beliefs?

Answer Back to table

  • Dear Tail-feather,
  • I understand your dilemma. Musicall
musiccan be such a powerful medium, and we have
to remember that its important to use it for
positive ends, not to perpetuate the degradation
and corruption of a society already preoccupied
with self-interest and excess. With that in mind,
I want to first point out that there is a lot of
rap music that does have an important message.
Just a few of my favorites include Tupacs
    Changes, Lauryn Hills Everything is
Everything (actually pretty much the whole
Miseducation album), Nas Be, Wyclefs Year of
the Dragon, and Outkasts Rosa Parks. Of
course, there are many other songs that address
real issues and encourage social reform. And of
course we should also bear in mind that even
songs that address real issues can be profane (I
need not provide examples here, since most of rap
music contains at least some profanity). So I
recommend edited versions where this is the
    case.
  • Also, some songs are not necessarily
promoting bad things, but theyre also not
quality music that stirs spiritual growth. I
think in these cases, we should remember to be
fair, and not to specifically incriminate rap
music. This is because all music (every genre
included) has amazing potential to uplift the
soul as well as incredible power to inspire
social evil or even self-hatred. Any artist and
any type of music can be a source of good values
or bad ones. And remember moderation in all
things. As we are constantly inundated with TV,
movies, the radio, magazines, and every other
form of popular media, it is almost impossible to
completely reject entire sections of the
entertainment flood. What we have to do is look
for what entities have value and worth, and set
our personal filters accordingly. Filter in
whats worth your time, mental attention, and
spiritual energy and filter out the rest.
  • The point is that we have to look with
a critical eye upon all media that we consume,
and music is no exception. The Bahai Writings
tell us to approach not the things which your
minds condemn (Gleanings, p. 279). The key here
is to use our rational faculty. You know deep
down whats good for your soul and whats not.
With that in mind, evaluate the worth of
different songs and different artists, and decide
what music is healthy for you to be supporting
    and internalizing.
  • This is, no doubt, the case with hip-hop
culture as well. It can be a vehicle for
    incredible self-expression, societal awareness,
and positive change. It is widely perceived that
the degradation and corruption of society, and
the promotion of self-interest and excess is much
more often the object of hip-hop than a lot of
the pop and rock music. However, we shouldnt
deny rap its worth. We just have to make sure we
choose the rap music that embodies those positive
values, rather than the music that promotes
    materialism, oppression, and unabashed solipsism.
So with rap and with the dancing that often
accompanies it, seek out what you feel is in line
with your beliefsdo this with moderation and
without approaching things that your mind
    condemns.
  • All that said, go ahead and shake your
tail-feather just make sure you use your heart
and your mind when doing so.

A Closing Poem
  • If music had no value By Sholeh Loehle
  • Poetry
  • If music had no valueWe wouldnt jump up and
    down at our first concert
  • If music had no valueWe wouldnt walk down the
street with a tune in our heads
  • If music had no valueWe wouldnt tap our toes
    with the rhythm
  • If music had no value We wouldnt have tears in
our eyes when the piano played
  • If music had no valueWe wouldnt dream of
singing until we lost our voices
  • If this wondrous thing never existed, if we never
knew what notes were, or a melody, or how
smoothly a guitar chord melds with a drum
beathow would we be inspired? To be a part of
something greater, all you have to do is slide a
CD or record into the player and close your eyes
(unless you are driving, in which case Id say
that would be a very bad idea). There are so many
choices available to us now all of the genres
have started losing their definitions. A song is
    created every second.
  • Think about itif there was no music. How much
would be lost? How many emotions, experiences,
and strands of memory would never be recorded?
How many tears would remain unshed? How many
smiles would never surface when the perfect song
    is heard?
