What is involved?
  • Three written papers Reading, Writing and
    Shakespeare
  • Reading - students answer questions on three
    pieces of modern fiction
  • Writing - students plan and complete one
    compulsory writing task
  • Shakespeare - this paper is in two parts
  • A) writing based on a theme or idea fromMacbeth
  • B) a writing task based on two specific scenes
    inMacbeth
  • Act 1, scene 3 and Act 3, scene 1

When are the tests?
  • Reading Thursday 6th May a.m.
  • Writing Thursday 6th May p.m.
  • Shakespeare Friday 7th May a.m.

Who marks the tests?
  • External examiners mark the tests in the same way
    as the GCSE and A level exams

How long does each test last?
  • Reading 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Writing 45 minutes
  • Shakespeare 1 hour and 15 minutes

How will my child prepare for the English tests?
  • In lessons
  • Students read Macbeth focusing on Act 1,
    scene 3 and Act 3, scene 1
  • Students practise writing timed answers
  • Students complete test papers from previous years
  • At home
  • Students practise specific reading and writing
    skills through homework tasks

How can I help my child?
  • Check the Student Planner for homework
  • Listen to homework answers being read aloud
  • Read one of the parts in Macbeth as your child
    reads other parts
  • Ask your child to explain work set in lessons and
    for homework

What is involved?
  • 3 test on the same day comprised of a
  • non calculator component, 1 hour in duration.
  • a calculator allowed component,1 hour in duration
  • and an aural test of approximately 30 minutes
  • 4 different tiers of entry.
  • 3 5 4 6 5 7 6 - 8
  • Each written paper is out of 60 marks.
  • 1 Aural paper. This is out of 30 (A and B)
  • Grand total 150. The pupils score out of 150
    will determine their SATs level. The papers are
    marked externally

  • Wednesday 5th May 2004
  • Non calculator paper (a.m.) 1 hour
  • Aural (a.m.) 30 mins
  • Calculator paper (p.m.) 1 hour

Our Role
  • All teaching classes in year 9 are set.
  • Past examination papers have been used
    extensively as homework tasks
  • Aural tests have been used in classes
  • W/b 29th March will be mock week. To ensure
    correct level of entry
  • Revision guides and work books have been ordered
    and are on the way to the pupils

How Can I Help My Child?
  • Go through the papers with them once they have
    been completed. Ask them to explain what and why
    they have done certain calculations
  • Go through old homework tasks to fill in
    knowledge gaps
  • Make/create a suitable space in the house so that
    at least 1 hour of work can be done undisturbed
  • Ensure they have the correct equipment as
    borrowing is not permitted
  • The internet. BBC sites Key Stage 3 Key bites and
    Counton.org

How is the subject organised?
  • 2 Tiers of entry Levels 3-6 and 5 7
  • 2 examination papers of 1 hour on the same day.
  • Both papers based on anything that has been
    covered in years 7 9.
  • The total mark for the two 3-6 papers is 180 and
    the total mark for the two 5-7 papers is 150.

What Level will I get?
  • On level 3-6 paper, over 100 will get a level 5.
  • On level 5-7 paper, over 100 will get a level 6.
  • On the same paper, approx 130 and over would be
    level 7.
  • In Science, unlike Maths, there is no such thing
    as level 8.

What is going to happen next?
  • Practice SATS Paper
  • On the week of March 22nd, all pupils to sit a 1
    hour paper from 2003.
  • This paper to confirm or otherwise, our judgement
    re correct tier of entry.
  • First lesson back after Easter, a further
    practice paper from last year.

What has already happened.
  • Pupil workbooks.
  • All pupils have been given a book of practice
    worksheets, which cover the whole programme of
    study.
  • They have been filling them in and will be
    expected to continue to do so as part of their
    revision.
  • Revision guides have been on sale in the
    department all year.

Recent Changes
  • Less emphasis on straight factual recall.
  • Some questions on scientific enquiry and ideas
    and evidence.
  • Questions test whether knowledge can be applied
    to unfamiliar situations, or test logical
    thinking.
  • This can cause problems as..
  • Pupils can look at questions and feel that they
    cannot do them.

How to play the system!
  • Dont panic!
  • All questions like this have hints in the
    question.
  • Read every question at least twice.
  • Answer all questions in proper English.
  • You will lose marks for text speak.
  • Any questions you can not do, come back to at the
    end and guess. You do not lose marks for wrong
    answers.

On the Day.
  • Get a good nights sleep the night before.
  • Get to school in good time.
  • Arrive properly prepared you can not borrow.
  • Do not forget, pen, pencil, ruler, protractor,
    calculator (new batteries) and spare pen and
    pencil.
