Title: Mitosis

1
Mitosis
2
Duration
  • Mitosis in a standard cell takes about an hour.
  • A standard cell divides roughly every 22 hours.

3
During non-mitosis
  • When a cell is not performing mitosis, it is
growing and preparing for the next mitotic
    division.
  • This time frame is referred to as interphase
and is split into 3 parts.
  • G1 1st growth phase aka Gap 1
  • S1 Synthesis phase
  • G2 2nd growth phase aka Gap 2

4
Division and multiplication
  • During cell division, organelles and DNA multiply
so that each daughter cell will have enough
    organelles.
  • Chromatin are unwound strands of DNA contained in
the nucleus. DNA stays in this form during
    interphase
  • Chromatids are tightly wound strands of DNA that
    coil into long cylinder shapes
  • Chromosomes result from pairs of sister
chromatids (a chromatid that replicates into 2)
linking together at a point called a centromere.

5
Whats that look like?
6
Mitosis
  • Mitosis is the process during which a cells
nucleus divides into two identical nuclei.
  • Following mitosis in most cells is cytokinesis.
  • Cytocell
  • Kinesismovement
  • Movement of cells cytoplasm into two daughter
    cells.

7
Stages of Mitosis
  • Mitosis is continuous but scientists have divided
it into steps based on location of DNA.
  • Prophase
  • Metaphase
  • Anaphase
  • Telophase

8
Prophase
  • Prophase Chromatids form and pair up
  • Nuclear envelope dissolves, centrioles appear

9
Metaphase
  • Metaphase Chromosomes align in middle

10
Anaphase
  • Anaphase Sister chromatids are pulled to
    opposite ends.

11
Telophase
  • Telophase Nuclear envelopes reform. Chromosomes
    unwind.

12
Cytokinesis
  • Cytokinesis After mitosis, cells finish dividing
    by seperating their cytoplasm.
