Title: The Doctrines of Calvinism

1
The Doctrines of Calvinism
  • Named for John Calvin, one of the Reformation
    leaders in the 16th Century.

2
The TULIP Doctrine
  • Total Depravity
  • Unconditional Election
  • Limited Atonement
  • Irresistible Grace
  • Perseverance of the Saints
  • Orig. Sin Cant do Good.
  • God pre-destined who would be saved.
  • Jesus didnt die for all just the predestined
    few.
  • Only saved if called
  • Once Saved, Always Saved

3
Calvinism Total Depravity (Original Sin)
  • re the sin of Adam and Eve
  • This their sin God was pleased to permit, having
purposed to order it to His own glory.
    (Westminster Confession, pg. 25)

4
Adam Had a Choice
  • Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being
tempted by God" for God cannot be tempted by
evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
    (James 113)

5
What does this parable teach against the notion
of Original, Inherited Sin?
  • What woman, if she has ten silver coins and
loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep
the house and search carefully until she finds
    it? (Luke 158)

There is a time that one is not lost from the
Lord before becoming lost to the Lord.
6
Does God Regard Original Sin?
  • "What do you mean by using this proverb
concerning the land of Israel, saying, 'The
fathers eat the sour grapes, But the children's
    teeth are set on edge'?
  • "As I live," declares the Lord God, "you are
surely not going to use this proverb in Israel
anymore. "Behold, all souls are Mine the soul of
the father as well as the soul of the son is
Mine. The soul who sins will die. (Ezekiel 181-4)

7
Does God Regard Original Sin?
  • "When the son has practiced justice and
righteousness and has observed all My statutes
and done them, he shall surely live. "The person
who sins will die. The son will not bear the
punishment for the father's iniquity, nor will
the father bear the punishment for the son's
iniquity the righteousness of the righteous will
be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked
will be upon himself. (Ezekiel 1819-20)

8
Calvinism Unconditional Election
  • Being born in a depraved state, we cannot choose
to do Good on our own.
  • Ergo, we cannot choose to be saved.
  • Before Creation, God ordained which individuals
    would be saved.
  • The Elect are saved through no choice or action
of their own. (No conditions to meet)

9
The Effect of Original Sin
  • From this original corruption we are utterly
indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all
good, and wholly inclined to all evil.
    (Westminster Confession, pg. 27)

10
Unconditional Election?
  • Peter said "I most certainly understand now that
God is not one to show partiality, but in every
nation the man who fears Him and does what is
right is welcome to Him. (Acts 1034-35)

11
Unconditional Election?
  • The jailer said, "Sirs, what must I do to be
saved?" They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus,
and you will be saved, you and your household."
    (Acts 1630-31)

12
Unconditional Election?
  • If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and
believe in your heart that God raised Him from
the dead, you will be saved for with the heart a
person believes, resulting in righteousness, and
with the mouth he confesses, resulting in
    salvation. (Romans 109-10)

13
Calvinism Limited Atonement
  • Neither are any other redeemed by Christ,
    effectually called, justified, adopted,
sanctified, and saved, but the elect only
  • The rest of mankind, God was pleased to pass
by, and to ordain them to dishonor and wrath for
    their sin.
  • Calvinism teaches that Jesus sacrifice was not
for everyone only for individuals predestined
    for salvation.

14
Limited Atonement?
  • The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some
count slowness, but is patient toward you, not
wishing for any to perish but for all to come to
    repentance. (2 Peter 39)

15
Limited Atonement?
  • This is good and acceptable in the sight of God
our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and
to come to the knowledge of the truth.
  • For there is one God, and one mediator also
between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who
gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony
given at the proper time. (1 Timothy 23-6)

16
Limited Atonement?
  • "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden,
and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke upon you
and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and You will find rest for your souls.
    (Matthew 1128-29)

17
Calvinism Irresistible Grace
  • All those whom God has predestined unto life,
and those only, He is pleased, in His appointed
and accepted time, effectually to call, by His
Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and
death to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ.

18
Irresistible Grace?
  • "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden,
and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke upon you
and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and You will find rest for your souls.
    (Matthew 1128-29)

If the Saved cannot resist Gods saving grace,
why does Jesus urge people to Come Take
Learn and Find Him? The burden of action is
not on God, but on us.
19
Irresistible Grace?
  • Peter said "I most certainly understand now that
God is not one to show partiality, but in every
nation the man who fears Him and does what is
right is welcome to Him. (Acts 1034-35)

The act of choosing is not placed on God, but on
us to fear Him and do what is right.
20
Irresistible Grace?
  • if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord,
and believe in your heart that God raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved for with the
heart a person believes, resulting in
righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses,
resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says,
whoever believes in Him will not be
disappointed." for whoever will call on the
name of the Lord will be saved." How then will
they call on Him in whom they have not believed?
How will they believe in Him whom they have not
heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?
    (Romans 109-14)

Salvation is dependant on choices made not only
by potential believers and confessors, but even
by preachers!
21
Calvinism Perseverance of the Saints
  • They whom God has accepted in His Beloved can
neither totally nor finally fall away from the
state of grace but shall surely persevere to the
    end, and be eternally saved.

22
Warnings on Falling from Grace
  • Through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined,
the brother for whose sake Christ died. (1
    Corinthians 811)

23
Warnings on Falling from Grace
  • If, after they have escaped the defilements of
the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them
and are overcome, the last state has become worse
    for them than the first.
  • For it would be better for them not to have known
the way of righteousness, than having known it,
to turn away from the holy commandment handed on
to them. It has happened to them according to the
true proverb, "A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT,"
and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing
in the mire." (2 Peter 220-22)

24
Warnings on Falling from Grace
  • My brethren, if any among you strays from the
truth and one turns him back, let him know that
he who turns a sinner from the error of his way
will save his soul from death and will cover a
    multitude of sins. (James 519-20)

25
Examples of Falling from Grace
  • Simon of Samaria (Acts 8)
  • Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 432 511)

26
The TULIP Doctrines
  • Total Depravity
  • Unconditional Election
  • Limited Atonement
  • Irresistible Grace
  • Perseverance of the Saints
  • These doctrines form the foundations of many
    churches, including Presbyterians, Reformed
groups and (to a limited extent) the Southern
    Baptist Convention.
  • These doctrines are without foundation in the
Bible, and are not the doings of our just and
    impartial God.
