Rapidly accelerating climate change (global
warming), which is caused by greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions, is now fueling dangerous
regional and global environmental events. Data
from the U.S. Energy Information Administration
illustrates that buildings are responsible for
almost half (48) of all GHG emissions annually.
Seventy-six percent of all electricity generated
by U.S. power plants goes to supply the 'Building
Sector'. Therefore, immediate action in the
Building Sector is essential if we are to avoid
hazardous climate change.

The Building Sector, as the major global
greenhouse gas emitting sector, is poised to fuel
the world's rush toward climate change on the
backs of coal. The U.S. alone is projected to
need 1,300 to 1,900 new power plants over the
next 20 years (about one plant every
week)... ...with 76 of all plant generated
electricity used just to operate buildings.

38
Importance of good air…
  • SBIC says
  • 15 of homeowners may be allergic to their own
    homes.
  • 40 of children born today will develop some form
    of respiratory disease.
  • Increased links have been found to ADD and asthma
    in children.
  • Of all the chemicals that the EPA monitors, only
two are more prevalent outdoors than indoors.

40
Material selection…
  • Materials used for the building envelope and
within the home home can include a variety of
chemicals that off-gas into the living space
  • Eliminate
  • Formaldehyde
  • VOCs
  • Toxic Wood Finishes
  • Toxic Adhesives
  • Dust, microbial growth, mold

Environmental impacts of buildings…
According to the U.S. Green Building Council,
U.S. buildings account for
37 of total energy use   68 of electricity
consumption   30 of greenhouse gas emissions
40 of raw materials use   30 of waste
output (136 million tons annually)
45
Construction Waste…
  • 3 to 5 pounds per square foot
  • 250 to 1,000 plus disposal cost

EPA calculates the amount of salvagable
structural lumber disposed of annually in the
US NEARLY 1 BILLION BOARD FEET

Green vs. sustainable…
Sustainability requires a level of thinking that
goes beyond purchasing green products. It
involves long-term, inter-generational
decision-making which will help us leave a
positive legacy for the future.
