Title: What is Autism

1
What is Autism?
  • Created by Autism New Jersey, 2009

2
What is Autism?
  • A condition that affects how a persons brain
    works
  • It is hard for some people with autism to
  • Say what they want or how they feel
  • Understand what other people are saying
  • Make friends
  • Learn new things

3
How Does Someone Get Autism?
  • It is something they are born with.
  • Autism is not contagious (that means you cant
    catch it).
  • Doctors are still trying to figure out why some
people have autism and others dont.

4
Can People with Autism Talk?
  • Some people with autism talk just like you do.
  • Others dont speak at all or use just a few
    words.
  • Some use sign language, pictures, or a special
    computer to talk.

5
How Would You Feel?
  • Close your eyes and imagine that you couldnt
talk to your parents, your teacher, or your
    friends

6
  • What if you felt sick or hungry or thirsty or
wanted something really badly and couldnt tell
    anyone?

7
  • What if you were really happy and excited about
    something and couldnt tell anyone?

8
  • What if you felt very sad or scared and couldnt
    tell anyone?

9
What Would Help?
  • What could other people do that might help you?
  • You could try to do those things to help your
    friends with autism.
  • People with autism arent all the same (just like
people who have freckles arent all the same),
but lets talk about some ideas that might help
    them

10
How to Help Your Friends Say What They Want or
Need
  • Give choices
  • Ask, Do you want Play-Doh or puzzles?
  • Wait a little bit longer for their answer
  • Sometime they just need a little extra time to
understand your words or think of what they want
    to say.
  • Some people with autism repeat what others say.
Just remember that theyre not teasing you but
    are trying their best.

11
Uh Oh
  • Sometimes, people who cant use words too well
might get so upset that they forget to follow the
    rules.
  • They may just grab what they want, yell, cry, or
even hit someone to try to make them understand.
  • If you see this happen, dont be scared. Your
teacher or their parents will know how to take
    care of it.

12
How to Help Your Friends Understand what Youre
Saying
  • Use their name and make sure they are paying
attention to you before you talk
  • Use short sentences
  • Try not to talk too fast
  • It helps if they can see what you mean instead of
    just hearing about it.
  • Show them the toy or activity youre talking
    about, or point to it.
  • In a nice way, say Look or Do this and show
    them how you do it.

13
How to Help Someone with Autism Play with You
  • Kids with autism may play with toys differently
    than you do.
  • They may think its fun to spin toys around or
    line them up.
  • They may seem like they dont want to play with
you or are ignoring you to play by themselves.
  • If someone is being mean or laughing at them,
please tell them to stop or tell your teacher
about it. Nobody likes to be made fun of!

14
Playing, continued
  • Try to include them in what youre playing.
  • If they like to spin a puzzle piece, you could
show them how to put the puzzle together.
  • If they like to line up trains, you could build a
track together and drive the trains.
  • Or you can join in what theyre doing.
  • Just like other kids, many children with autism
are very good at drawing, building with Legos,
playing on the computer, or other fun activities.
  • Sometimes they may have trouble sharing, but you
can be a big help with this.

15
How to Help Your Friends Learn New Things
  • Use the ideas we talked about before
  • Like showing them how you do it, using short
sentences, and giving them extra time to answer
    you.
  • They may go to other teachers for part of the day
to work on speech or other things that are hard
    for them.
  • There are teachers who have learned special ways
    to teach students with autism.
  • They are looking for good buddies for their
students and may have more ideas on how you can
    help!

16
What About You?
  • We all have things were good at and things we
need extra help with or to learn more about.
  • Fill in the blanks Im good at ___, and I need
    some help with ___.
  • Be proud of your friends with autism when they
make progress at learning something new (even if
its something you learned a long time ago).

17
A Few More Things about Autism
  • Things that you dont notice (like loud noises,
crowds, or being touched) might bother someone
    who has autism.
  • Sometimes people with autism wave their hands in
the air, rock back and forth, jump, or make
noises if theyre excited, upset, or bored.
  • Try not to stare or feel uncomfortable. Your
teacher or their parents know if they should take
care of it or if its okay.
