WiMAX
  • By Damon Staples

2
What is WiMax?
  • Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access .
The Forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based
technology enabling the delivery of last mile
wireless broadband access as an alternative to
    cable and DSL."
  • This was chosen because I feel like WiMax is used
a lot and is a great
  • alternative to cable and DSL for the last
    mile.
  • Last Mile - is the final leg of delivering
connectivity from a communications provider to a
    customer.

3
How Does WiMAX Works
  • It has two parts , a tower and receiver. A WiMAX
tower station can connect directly to the
Internet using a high-bandwidth, wired connection
(for example, a T3 line). It can also connect to
another WiMAX tower using a line-of-sight,
microwave link. This connection to a second tower
(often referred to as a backhaul), along with the
ability of a single tower to cover up to 3,000
square miles, is what allows WiMAX to provide
    coverage to remote rural areas.

4
Is It Better than ?
  • WiMAX would operate similar to WiFi but at higher
speeds, over greater distances and for a greater
number of users. WiMAX could potentially erase
the suburban and rural blackout areas that
currently have no broadband Internet access
because phone and cable companies have not yet
run the necessary wires to those remote
    locations.

5
Applications
  • Cell Phones
  • T-Mobile is using WiMax to underpin a service
    that will provide high-speed wireless
connectivity to passengers on board trains.
  • Computers
  • IBM uses it as a part of their wireless
    connection.

6
What is needed.
  • It needs a device that is capable of receiving a
    signal and a Radio Frequency.

7
What I think about WiMax
  • I think that this bit of technology is very nice
and can be a lot more helpful than the other ways
    of accessing a wireless connection.
