The Titanic grazed an iceberg in the North
Atlantic. Having heard reports of water entering
the hold, the Captain went below to conduct an
inspection. After some rapid calculations, he
determined that the ship was doomed to go down
within one and a half hours. Grasp of an altered
reality comes slowly, not as much a result of
denial as of not comprehending. At the beginning
of the 21st century, the tale of the Titanic
comes close to describing the perceptual gap we
now face our inability to comprehend the scale
of the ongoing degradation of the planet and how
it will affect our future. Few understand the
magnitude of the potential tragedy fewer still
have a good idea of what to do about
it. Lester Brown, Worldwatch Institute

Course Objective Our lives are increasingly
touched by questions about environmental
degradation at local, regional and global scales.
Business as usual is being challenged. This
course will stimulate you to go beyond the often
simplistic portraits of the environmental dilemma
offered by the mass media so that you will have a
firmer basis for responsible citizenship and
action on environmental issues.

If actions are taken now across the corporate
world, mankind may survive the turbulent 100
years we have ahead. By making green investment
a motive for success rather than a charitable
adjunct to companies existence humanity will
dramatically increase the chance of its
survival. Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin
Atlantic Airlines

Our enormously productive economy demands that we
make consumption our way of life, that we convert
the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we
week our spiritual satisfaction, our ego
satisfaction, in consumption. We need things
consumed, burned up, worn out, replace and
discarded at an ever increasing rate.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It
knows that it must run faster than the fastest
lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion
also wakes up. It knows it must outrun the
slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It
doesnt matter whether you are a lion or a
gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be
running. Old African Proverb
