Let It Snow!
http//youtube.com/watch?vF9GWWn62jqE
Oh the weather outside is frightful But the fire
is so delightful And since we've no place to
go Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! It
doesn't show signs of stopping And I've bought
some corn for popping The lights are turned way
down low Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it
snow! When we finally kiss goodnight How I'll
hate going out in the storm! But if you'll really
hold me tight All the way home I'll be warm The
fire is slowly dying And, my dear, we're still
goodbying But as long as you love me so Let it
snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! When we finally
kiss goodnight How I'll hate going out in the
storm! But if you'll really hold me tight All the
way home I'll be warm. The fire is slowly
dying And, my dear, we're still goodbying But as
long as you love me so Let it snow! Let it snow!
Let it snow...! Ouw!
For many generations, we have known Let it Snow
as a classic carol we sing festively during the
winter holidays. I found that this familiar tune
actually has a connection to The Giver as well.
If you recall, after his first day of training
with The Giver, Jonas received a memory, his very
first memory. This memory was sledding in the
snow. In Jonass community, there are no hills,
there is no cold, and there is no light feathery
snow due to climate control. This was all new to
Jonas and it was the first pleasurable memory he
received of something very different from what he
knew, the first thing that made him look back and
say, well maybe it would be nice if we still had
that today. An example of this was on page
84 Jonas frowned. I wish we still had those
things. Just every now and then. This would
later become the foundation for why Jonas left
the community he continued to be dissatisfied
with his inadequate lifestyle after living the
memories of weather and emotion of the past.

Blue Skies
http//youtube.com/watch?vh03eH51rsuM
When I was making my soundtrack, this song is
one of the first that came to mind. When I heard
this song in dance class, I knew it would be
perfect for this assignment. Blue Skies has
numerous connections to The Giver. The first
connection I can make is to the very name of the
song, blue skies. In the beginning of the book,
Jonas did know what color was he saw shades of
gray, like the other citizens of his community.
However, after receiving memories, he slowly got
the gift of color. The reason this connects is
because in Jonass community nobody knows what
blue is because after sameness, color was taken
away. In the first verse, it says blue birds
singing a song. First of all, bluebirds were not
a known creature to people in Jonass community.
Actually, no animals were. I believe animals also
left the community during sameness. Animals?
Jonas suggested. He laughed. Thats right,
Lily said, laughing too. Like animals. Neither
child knew what the word meant, exactly, but it
was often used to describe someone uneducated or
clumsy, someone who didnt fit in. My last
connection deals with the sentence says Never
saw the sun shinin so bright. The very second
memory Jonas recieved is of sunshine. The warmth
spread, extending across his shoulders, up his
neck, onto the side of his face, He could feel it
through his clothed parts too a pleasant,
all-over sensation and when he licked his lips
this time, the air was hot and heavy. This was
an excerpt from the book describing how Jonas
felt the first time he experienced sunshine. As
you can see, this song is filled with connections
to The Giver.
  • Blue skies smilin' at me Nothin' but blue skies
do I see Bluebirds singin' a song Nothin' but
bluebirds all day long Never saw the sun shinin'
so bright Never saw things goin' so
right Noticing the days hurrying by When you're
in love, my how they fly Blue days, all of them
gone Nothin' but blue skies from now on (Blue
skies smilin' at me Nothin' but blue skies do I
see) Never saw the sun shinin' so bright Never
saw things goin' so right Noticing the days
hurrying by When you're in love, my how they
fly Blue days, all of them gone Nothin' but blue
skies from now on Nothin' but blue skies from now

Chipmunk Song
http//youtube.com/watch?vqmZtDb3ClZo
For as long as I can remember, the Chipmunk Song
has been my favorite Christmas Carol. As a child,
I loved the T.V. show and probably have seen
every episode made! Thats why, when I found a
connection between this song and The Giver, I was
beyond excited! This song connects to a specific
memory. In fact, this song connects to the
Givers very favorite memory the memory of love
and family. He could see through a window that
outside it was night, and snowing. There were
colored lights red and green and yellow,
twinkling from a tree which was, oddly, inside
the room. This sentence suggests that this is
Christmas time. The Chipmunk song is a Christmas
carol. Can you see the connection here?? This
memory also connects to the book in another way,
love. Jonas hesitated. I certainly liked the
memory, though. I can see why it was your
favorite. I couldnt quite get the word for the
whole feeling of it, the feeling that was so
strong in the room. Love, the Giver told him.
Because Ive seen every episode of Alvin and the
Chipmunks ever made, I know that there is a
strong sense of love and care between these
three chipmunks and Dave. The chipmunks and Dave
form a sort of a family, and are happy together,
and really care about each other. This is the
feeling Jonas is getting in this memory. This is
the feeling which finally convinces Jonas that he
cant live in his community any longer, where
love doesnt mean a thing. Even though it may not
seem like it, the Chipmunk Song and The Giver
have many things in common.
  • Christmas, Christmas time is near Time for
toys and time for cheer We've been good, but we
can't last Hurry Christmas, hurry fast Want a
plane that loops the loop Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait Please Christmas,
don't be late. Want a plane that loops the
loop I still want a hula hoop We can hardly
stand the wait Please Christmas, don't be late.
We can hardly stand the wait Please Christmas,
    don't be late.

Apologize
http//youtube.com/watch?vePyRrb2-fzs
  • I'm holding on your rope, Got me ten feet off
the ground I'm hearin what you say but I just
can't make a sound You tell me that you need
me Then you go and cut me down, but wait You tell
me that you're sorry Didn't think I'd turn
around, and say... It's too late to apologize,
it's too late I said it's too late to apologize,
it's too late I'd take another chance, take a
fall Take a shot for you And I need you like a
heart needs a beat But it's nothin new I loved
you with a fire red- Now it's turning blue, and
you say... "Sorry" like the angel heaven let me
think was you But I'm afraid... It's too late
to apologize, it's too late I said it's too late
to apologize, it's too late Bridge
    (guitar/piano) It's too late to apologize, it's
too late I said it's too late to apologize, it's
too late It's too late to apologize, yeah I said
it's too late to apologize, yeah- I'm holdin on
your rope, got me ten feet off the ground...

When I heard this song on the radio, I thought
of how Jonas felt after he found out what release
really was and how his dad was lying to him.
Before, Jonas used to think that when someone was
released, they were sent to a fictional world
call Elsewhere. However, the true reality of
release is death. When Jonas found out that his
dad actually kills babies as a part of his
living, he was upset and angry. This is one of
the major factors, I think, that led him into
leaving the community. This act of such cruelty
and evilness I think was the icing on the cake
for Jonas and really showed him that this
community is not worth living in. How do I
connect this song to this feeling? Thats a very
good question. Look at the main chorus Its too
late to apologize....After Jonas found out about
release this is how he felt towards his father.
After murdering so many innocent babies and lying
about it, Jonas felt that it was too late for
anything like an apology, and that nothing could
possibly make up for what his dad did. Jonas
felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the
feeling of terrible pain clawing its way forward
to emerge in a cry. This is an excerpt from the
book that clearly shows how Jonas feels when he
realizes what his father has done. The twin, he
now knows is dead. Nothing will bring that
innocent infant back to life, even though it did
not deserve its death. Nothing can make up for
what Jonass dad did. Nothing. Not even an
apology.

Where is the Love?

What's wrong with the world, mama People livin'
like they ain't got no mamas I think the whole
world addicted to the drama Only attracted to
things that'll bring you trauma Overseas, yeah,
we try to stop terrorism But we still got
terrorists here livin' In the USA, the big
CIA The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK But if
you only have love for your own race Then you
only leave space to discriminate And to
discriminate only generates hate And when you
hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah Madness
is what you demonstrate And that's exactly how
anger works and operates Man, you gotta have love
just to set it straight Take control of your mind
and meditate Let your soul gravitate to the love,
y'all, y'all CHORUS People killin', people
dyin' Children hurt and you hear them cryin' Can
you practice what you preach And would you turn
the other cheek Father, Father, Father help
us Send some guidance from above 'Cause people
got me, got me questionin' Where is the love
(Love)
Nations droppin' bombs Chemical gasses fillin'

but the reason's undercover The truth is kept

truth, y'all, come on (I don't know) Where's the
love, y'all
REPEAT CHORUS Sing wit me y'all One world,

Where is the Love?
http//youtube.com/watch?vFI2tceUD3os
  • This song has so many connections to The Giver I
could go on for days! First of all, look at the
title, Where is the love? I think that after
experiencing what love was, this is the question
Jonas kept asking himself before he left. Where
is the love? How could people in this community
not feel this powerful emotion? This was probably
a major factor in Jonas leaving, the absence of
love. The rest of the song, however, focuses on a
point which connects to this book in a very
different way. Take for example the chorus. This
describes the miseries of the world, all the bad
being done and all the sin being committed
amongst human beings. I think that that is the
reason that the very first leaders of this
community went into sameness and a place with so
much control and so little choice. I think that
the people who first lead this utopia wanted to
create a world without world hunger, war, and
pain. I think that was the initial goal that
somehow got carried away. But, they never
realized that it is important to feel pain and
experience war, so we can grow within as people
and realize what is right and what is wrong. I
think Jonas thought the same thing after he
experienced the pain of war, the agony of hunger,
and the wretchedness of the true world. Then
finally, he was able to become a complete human
being and finally realize the meaning of the
emotions used so passively in everyday language.
Where is the love? This was the question Jonas
was asking when he experienced the cruelty of war
in his memories. But, more importantly, this was
the question he was asking when he reflected back
on his own life in his blank community.

How Far Weve Come
http//youtube.com/watch?vhlqfpPf_EO0
  • I'm waking up at the start of the end of the
world, but its feeling just like every other
morning before, Now I wonder what my life is
going to mean if it's gone, The cars are moving
like a half a mile an hour if that, and started
staring at the passengers who're waving
goodbye can you tell me what was ever really
special about me all this time? chorus But I
believe the world is burning to the ground oh
well I guess we're gonna find out let's see how
far we've come let's see how far we've come Well
I, believe, it all, is coming to an end oh well,
I guess, we're gonna pretend, let's see how far
we've come let's see how far we've come I think
it turned ten o'clock but I don't really
know then I can't remember caring for an hour or
so started crying and I couldn't stop myself I
started running but there's no where to run to I
sat down on the street, took a look at
myself said where you going man you know the
world is headed for hell say all goodbyes if
you've got someone you can say goodbye
    to repeat chorus
  • Its gone gone baby its all gone there is no one
on the corner and there's no one at home well it
was cool cool, it was just all cool now it's over
for me and it's over for you well its gone gone
baby its all gone there's no one on the corner
and there's no one at home well it was cool cool,
it was just all cool now it's over for me and
    it's over for you

This song, like Where is the Love?, connects to
the harsh reality of life. The last sentence in
the 1st stanza says Now I wonder what my lifes
going to mean if its gone. When Jonas looks at
the lack of emotion and care in his community he
probably wonders, will people care if I
disappeared, would my family really grieve for my
death? After Jonas looks at how quickly and
thoughtlessly his very own father can take the
life of innocent infants, he realizes that in his
community, people and their lives dont matter as
much as they would in our world. In our world, we
would never kill off an innocent baby, and if we
did, the person killing would have a very
difficult time with it. Jonas probably realizes
that after he dies, like this infant, no one
would really care. His friends, who never
actually experienced the feeling of true loyalty
and relationships would not grieve, his family
would be split up anyway, and his birth parents
would not care even if they knew. After looking
at how quickly people are released without a
second thought, and the lack of emotion, this is
probably a powerful line and question which
really connects to the way Jonas feels. Well I
believe It all is coming to an end. Oh well, I
guess were gonna pretend. This line also has a
big connection to the book. Emotions, choices,
feeling, are all coming to an end in this
controlling community but everyones just going
to pretend, because nobody anymore has access to
these lost parts of life. Also, this could be
applied to release. Although someones life is
coming to an end, the people in charge of this
just pretend that nothing out of the ordinary is
happening and that these dying people are just
being sent to Elsewhere. Last, but not least,
look at the ending lines of the song. Lets see
how far weve come. Lets see how far we go.
After seeing and experiencing the memories of the
past, Jonas probably thought to himself, why
dont we come together and see how far weve
come? Why dont we see how much all of this
sameness and lack of emotion has brought us good
and a better quality of life? And he probably
thought to himself, how far will we go with all
of this? And how far can I go? This is the
question Jonas asked himself before he left, and
after that, he realized that he could not go any
further.
  • repeat chorus
  • let's see how far we go let's see how far we've
come let's see how far we go let's see how far
we've come let's see how far we go let's see how
far we've come let's see how far we go let's see
    how far we've come

All Good Things
http//youtube.com/watch?v1j5_7V0DMkA
  • Honestly what will become of me don't like
reality It's way too clear to me But really life
is dandy We are what we don't see Missed
    everything daydreaming Chorus Flames to
dust Lovers to friends Why do all good things
come to an end Flames to dust Lovers to
friends Why do all good things come to an
end come to an end come to an Why do all good
things come to end? come to an end come to an Why
do all good things come to an end? Traveling I
only stop at exits Wondering if I'll stay Young
and restless Living this way I stress less I want
to pull away when the dream dies The pain sets it
and I don't cry I only feel gravity and I wonder
    why
  • CHORUS
  • Well the dogs were whistling a new tune Barking
at the new moon Hoping it would come soon so that
they could Dogs were whistling a new tune Barking
at the new moon Hoping it would come soon so that
they could Die die die die die CHORUS
  • Well the dogs were barking at a new
moon Whistling a new tune Hoping it would come
soon And the sun was wondering if it should stay
away for a day 'til the feeling went away And the
sky was falling on the clouds were dropping
and the rain forgot how to bring salvation the
dogs were barking at the new moon Whistling a new
tune Hoping it would come soon so that they could
    die.

This song has one main connection to The Giver.
That is the chorus. Why do all good things come
to an end? This is exactly how Jonas felt about
his life when he became Receiver. Jonas did not
want to go back. He didnt want the memories,
didnt want the honor, didnt want the wisdom,
didnt want the pain. He wanted his childhood
again, his scraped knees and ball games. As you
can see, Jonas is sad that his childhood has come
to and end. He is saddened by the fact that he
cant relate to his family or his closest friends
anymore. Why do all good things come to an end?
Also, Jonas his upset about sameness. He wants
the hills back, he wants to experience snow, to
go sailing. He wants to celebrate the holidays in
a loving environment with his grandparents. But,
he will not be able to do that in his community,
it was not practical and therefore, discontinued.
Why do all good things come to an end? When Jonas
left, he went on a quest to find Elsewhere, the
place he believed was filled with love and
family. But, there, I think he died. Why do all
good things come to an end?

The Sound of Music
http//youtube.com/watch?vo5dUwsWTpnk
The hills are alive with the sound of music With
songs they have sung for a thousand years The
hills fill my heart with the sound of music My
heart wants to sing every song it hears My heart
wants to beat like the wings of the birds that
rise from the lake to the trees My heart wants to
sigh like a chime that flies from a church on a
breeze To laugh like a brook when it trips and
falls over stones on its way To sing through the
night like a lark who is learning to pray I go
to the hills when my heart is lonely I know I
will hear what I've heard before My heart will be
blessed with the sound of music And I'll sing
once more
The sound of music, a classic song and musical
that I have seen at least 5 times! This song,
like the others connects to The Giver. The hills
are alive with the sound of music. First of all,
hills were banished from Jonass community, when
climate control and sameness came into affect.
Jonas is probably one of the only people who know
what a hill is, and miss it. This song also
describes many other environmental factors that
were banished from Jonass community. There were
no lakes or no breeze in his community. People
did not know what birds were, and did not at all
know what a lark was. Another way this song
connects with The Giver is music itself. As Jonas
began to see color, the Giver began to hear
music. Music was banned from the community and
was long forgotten, but when the Giver was
becoming a Receiver himself, he experienced
music. Jonas, however, did not know music until
the end of the book. For the first time, he
heard something that he knew to be music. He
heard people singing. That is how this classic
song connects to this controversial book.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
http//www.youtube.com/watch?v10w_sEcHlGsNR1
  • Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high There's a
land that I heard of Once in a lullaby
  • Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And
the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come
    true
  • Some day I'll wish upon a star And wake up where
the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt
like lemondrops Away above the chimney
tops That's where you'll find me
  • Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds
fly over the rainbow Why then, oh why can't I?
  • If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the
rainbow Why, oh why can't I?

The first and most obvious connection I can make
between this song and The Giver is that the Giver
gave Jonas the memory of a rainbow. However, it
goes much deeper than that. Somewhere over the
rainbow, way up high, theres a land that I heard
of, once in a lullaby. This, I think represents
Jonass idea of Elsewhere. Somewhere, far away,
there is a land filled with snow and sunshine,
with love and family, a land which Jonas visited
through his memories. Somewhere over the
rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you
dare to dream really do come true. This I think
is showing how much more opportunity there is in
Elsewhere. The opportunity to dream and to be
loved, the opportunity to live in a place where
people made their own choices and experienced
real emotion. The third stanza illustrates how
much Jonas wants to be in that place, and how
much he wishes he could be there. Also, I think
this kind of shows his attempted journey to find
Elsewhere in the end of the book. Somewhere over
the rainbow, bluebirds fly. If birds fly over the
rainbow, why, oh why cant I? This I think more
than wanting to be in Elsewhere and going to
Elsewhere represents emotion. Why cant Jonas
live in a place where love was felt and the
elderly lived with the family. Why couldnt Jonas
live in a place full of love and holidays and
snow? Why couldnt Jonass community work that
way. This song has a very deep connection to The
Giver which took me a long time to notice.

Good Riddance
http//www.youtube.com/watch?v3ZuJIr_uW3M
  • Another turning point, a fork stuck in the
road Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you
where to go So make the best of this test, and
don't ask why It's not a question, but a lesson
learned in time It's something unpredictable,
but in the end it's right. I hope you had the
time of your life. So take the photographs, and
still frames in your mind Hang it on a shelf in
good health and good time Tattoos of memories and
dead skin on trial For what it's worth it was
worth all the while It's something
unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope
you had the time of your life. It's something
unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope
you had the time of your life. It's something
unpredictable, but in the end it's right. I hope
you had the time of your life.

This song is one of my favorites and has
numerous connections with The Giver. Another
turning point, a fork stuck in the road, time
grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go,
so make the best of this test, and don't ask why,
it's not a question, but a lesson learned in
time. I think that this is symbolizing Jonass
escape. It is a turning point for him because he
is leaving all he knows, the place where he grew
up. Time grabs him by the wrist and directs him
where to go. Jonass ending escape was not
planned. It kind of just came to him, he knew the
time was right. He didnt have extra food, he
didnt have directions to this other community
which may not even exist. He just knew that it
was time to go, time to leave all of this
control. Its something unpredictable, but in
the end its right. I hope you had the time of
your life. Leaving his community was
unpredictable, and scary but in the end it was
right. Jonas could not stand to live in a place
with so little emotion, where people didnt
actually care for one another. I hope you had
the time of your life. This is simply stating
that you should have enjoyed this lifestyle and
community while it lasted, because you are ready
to move on and go to a new place, where people
live much differently. Say your goodbyes, because
you will not see these people again. This must
have been very difficult for Jonas. His family,
his friends, his school, leaving all of it. I
dont think Ill ever be able to be that brave.

Shadow of the Day

  • I close both locks below the window. I close
both blinds and turn away. Sometimes solutions
arent so simple. Sometimes goodbyes the only
way. And the sun will set for you the sun will
set for you. And the shadow of the day, Will
embrace the world in grey, And the sun will set
for you... In cards and flowers on your
window, Your friends all plead for you to
    stay. Sometimes beginnings arent so
simple. Sometimes goodbyes the only way. And
the sun will set for you, the sun will set for
you. And the shadow of the day, Will embrace the
world in gray, And the sun will set for
you.. And the shadow of the day, Will embrace
the world in gray, And the sun will set for
you.. And the shadow after the day, Will
embrace the world in gray, And the sun will set
    for you.

This song really connects with Jonas and his
feelings. Sometimes solutions arent so simple.
Sometimes goodbyes the only way. For Jonas,
leaving his community was not simple. He was
leaving everything he knew, his familiar way of
life, his family, his friends, and everything he
had grown to care about. This was definitely not
simple for him and was probably extremely
frightening. However, goodbye was the only way.
He could not stand to live in a place with so
little emotion and so much control , a place
where he could not relate to anyone, where life
was a drag. Leaving was the only way he could
save himself. The shadow world today, will
embrace the world in gray. This kind of connects
to color. The shadow, referring to the leaders of
the community, made everything gray, so nothing
would have color. This can also mean something
else. The shadow world, is also referring to
sameness in this case, but can refer to emotions
and personalities too. Sameness kind of took away
all of the uniqueness from the world. It took
away all of the emotions, and just embraced the
world in gray by making everyone gray on the
inside. People didnt experience love, or pain,
and didnt have specific traits because well,
they had become gray. That is how this song
connects to The Giver.
