What is Occupational Therapy?
  • Occupational therapy is skilled treatment that
    helps individuals achieve independence in all
    facets of their lives. Occupational therapy
    assists people in developing the "skills for the
    job of living" necessary for independent and
    satisfying lives. Services typically include- AOTA

WHAT IS SCHOOL-BASED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
  • School-based occupational therapy may include
    individual or small group treatment,
    consultation, monitoring or environmental
    adaptations.
  • School-based occupational therapy is a support
    service to a student's educational program.
    School occupational therapists use therapeutic
    activities that may improve a student's ability
    to function within the school environment in the
    areas of self-help. work and play. School
    occupational therapists assess the following
    areas
  • Postural stability
  • Self-help skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Visual perception and integration
  • Sensory motor skills hyper/hypo

School based Occupational Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy provides services for
    students who have fine motor, visual-perceptual
    motor difficulties secondary to musculo-skeletal
    or nervous system impairments.
  • Students must have the ability to actively
    participate in Occupational Therapy Treatment.
  • Students whose primary limitation is attention
    span or cognitive delays may appear to have fine
    motor and/or visual perceptual motor delays.
  • Remediation attention span or cognition is not
    within the scope of school-based occupational
    therapy.
  • Prime Age Therapy is more effective for children
    from birth through age of eight to ten years.
  • Acute Trauma Therapy may be advisable for older
    children following an acute trauma which leads to
    a long-term disability.
  • Previous Therapy Alternative programs should be
    considered for children who have received
    previous therapy.

  • Students whose primary limitation is attention
    span.
  • Students who are functioning at their cognitive
    level
  • with fine motor tasks.
  • Students without IEPs need the consent of a
  • program specialist

After The Referral
  • Therapist will screen child consult with staff
  • If appropriate for an assessment plan
  • Confirm with parents that they are interested
    in Therapy evaluation sign assessment plan.
  • If Not appropriate for an assessment
  • Respond in writing to staff and parents to why
    an assessment is not appropriate, and consult
    with parents.
