Title: Chicken Pox

1
Chicken Pox
2
Introduction
  • Chicken pox is an illness caused by the varicella
    virus.
  • Most people have chicken pox as children.
  • It is rare for it to occur a second time.
  • The virus can occur later in life, known as
    shingles.

3
Pathogen
  • Chicken pox is caused by the virus
    varicella-zoster(VZV).
  • It is a member of the herpesvirus family.

4
Transmission
  • Chicken pox is spread when someone breathes in
the virus in the air by a person who already has
    it.
  • It is also found in the fluid of blisters, so
they can get it if he or she touches the blister.

5
Body's Immune Response
  • At first the person has a low fever varying from
    101 to 105 degrees.
  • Feel very tired.
  • Moderate to severe itching.
  • Small red bumps then appear.
  • Those bumps become itchy.
  • The organ that is infected is the skin.

6
Bodys Immune Response (continued)
  • The bumps begin to look like blisters with clear
    like fluid in them.
  • Then finally the the fluid in the blisters turns
cloudy and then begin to break.
  • Then a crust or scab forms while the skin heals.

7
Treatment
  • Chicken pox has no cure, however different kinds
of treatment can help patients feel more
comfortable while they are healing from chicken
    pox.

8
Current Research
  • Scientist are working on a vaccine which does
not make the immune response as bad.
  • This vaccine will shorten the time in which the
person is infected with the virus, and will not
make the case as bad as it usually is.

9
Summery
  • Chicken pox is not a deadly virus, but can effect
people in many different ways. It is a type of
virus that has steps during the illness. Starting
when a person gets infected by the disease, to
where the chicken pox go through the crusting and
shedding stage. Since there is no cure for
chicken pox, there is however, vaccines that are
taken to make the immune system not respond as
much to the virus as it usually does when someone
    is infected with the disease.
