Paul Harris For the need of Friendship Chicago,
23 February 1905
In his autobiography, Paul Harris wrote the great need of human companionship. Perhaps it
was part and parcel of the cosmic scheme surely
it was made apparent to me that men must have the
companionship of those of their kind. The thought
came to me why not in big Chicago have a
fellowship composed of just one man from each of
many different occupations, without restrictions
as to their politics or religion, with broad
tolerance of each other's opinions?

In February 1905 I called three young business
men to meet with me and I laid before them a very
simple plan of mutual co-operation and informal
friendship (…). They agreed to my plan Silvester
Schiele, my most intimate Chicago friend, (…)
Gustavus Loehr and Hiram Shorey
Friendship was the foundation rock on which
Rotary was built and tolerance is the element
which holds it together. There is enough atomic
energy in every Rotary club to blow it into a
thousand bits were it not for the spirit of
tolerance just such tolerance as marked the life
of my grandfather from which my own faith sprang.

Paul Percy Harris was born in Racine, Wisconsin,
the 19 April 1868.
At the age of three, together with his 5-year-old
brother Cecil, Paul was brought by his father in
Wallingford, Vermont, in his paternal
grandparents home. Some years later, Cecil moved
in Aunt Mels home and Paul remained alone at
home with his grandparents, while his sister Lina
May was staying with their parents.
His childhood and boyhood was very signed by the
simple and rural life of a little Vermont country
village at the end of Eighteen Century.

b) The meeting places rotation
several suggestions as a name for the club, among
them Rotary, and that name was selected as we
were then holding our meetings in rotation at our
offices and places of business. Later, still
rotating, we held our meetings at various hotels
and restaurants. Thus we began as "Rotarians,"
and such we continue to be.
At the same time, to be able to work and
interact, the Rotary dented wheel needs to
trasmit motion to other wheels through equal
teeth the Rotary wheel can be seen as the equal
capacity of friendship, correctness, solidarity
and richness of service for the Club and the
community in general, no matter for their social
status, for nationality, and for political or
religiuos belief!

Trustees of The Rotary Foundation
Clubs Rotarians are members of more than 32,000
Rotary clubs, which belong to the global
association of Rotary International (RI). Each
club elects its own officers and enjoys
considerable autonomy within the framework of
Rotarys constitution and bylaws.
Districts Clubs are grouped into approximately
530 RI districts, each led by a district
governor, who is an RI officer and leads about 50
clubs. The district administration, including
assistant governors and various committees,
guides and supports the clubs.

policies and manage Rotary affairs. Traditionally,
the RI president, who is elected annually,
develops a theme and emphasis for the year.
The Secretariat The Secretariat is responsible
of the RI management. The Secretariats active
managing officer is the general secretary, who
heads a 650-member staff working to serve
Rotarians worldwide from the RI Headquarter and
the seven international offices in Argentina,
Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Korea, and
Switzerland. The office of Rotary International
in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI), located in

The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation The 15
directors of The Rotary Foundation are appointed
by the RI president, with the agreement of the RI
Board. The Trustees manage all business of the
Foundation. The trustee chair, who serves for one

Sir Henry Braddon Rotary Club Sidney President,
a.r. 1921/1922
is in preserving the boy in him. Deep down in the
heart of every good fellow there is a boy, a boy
whose outlook on life is rather wonderful,
unspoiled, with no prejudice, no intolerance,
with keen enthusiasm, ready friendliness. It is a
sad day for a man when the boy can be said to
have passed away. As long as a man keeps his mind
resilient, his nature open to friendly
influences, he will never grow entirely old.
Rotary encourages and helps to develop him by
keeping the boy alive in him

of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it
will perish if we work on brass, time will
efface it if we rear temples they will crumble
into dust. But if we work upon immortal minds,
if we imbue them with the full meaning of the
spirit of Rotary as expressed in our Objects and
with the just fear of God and love of our

something that will brighten all eternity.

We wish to conclude with the words of Paul
Harris
of men have been born anew in the spirit of
Rotary, into old-fashioned friendliness and
neighborliness such as I knew in my New England
home… My reward has been exceedingly great. To
have friends all over the world is a great
blessing. To know that these friends are also
friends of each other is a satisfying thought.
The salutation, "Good Morning, Paul!" which
gladdened my heart in boyhood days in my valley
is now the greeting of my fellow Rotarians and
continues to be sweet music in my ears, whether
it be spoken by rich or poor, young or old.
